This evening on our educational feature we look at how to prepare for a successful visa application. Many countries require you to have a visa – a document that’s either physically attached to your passport, or in the case of an e-visa, linked electronically – that entitles you to enter the country you plan to visit. This is issued by the relevant embassy or consulate. Ahead of applying for a visa, it’s crucial to ensure your finances are in order.

Overseas travel is extremely expensive for South Africans, due to the weak rand and high cost of living in popular foreign destinations. For example, a two-week trip to France, can cost R48,000-R91,000, or more. Expenses include a round-trip flight (R12,000-R20,000), accommodation (R1,500-R3,000 daily), food and eating out (R500-R1,000 daily), transport (R3,000- 5,000), and sightseeing and activities (R5,000-R10,000).

Because travel is a significant investment for a middle-income earner, it’s vital to ensure your travel plans are not ruined at the last minute. So, Sarah Nicholson, operations manager of JustMoney.co.za, joins us to talk about the do’s and don’ts of applying for a visa.

Many parts of the country including Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga experienced a heatwave this weekend and today. The South African Weather Service forecasted temperatures to be as high as 34 degrees Celsius this past weekend. It says the heatwave will persist until today over the eastern parts of the Northwest and the Free State. As if that wasn’t bad, the South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued two Yellow Level 2 warning for various parts of the country for today. This means while the heatwave persists, we might also experience some wind and thunderstorm this evening. To give us a better understanding of what to make of all of this we’re joined by SA Weather forecaster, Luthando Masimini.

This evening on Legal Matters we talk about the payment of gratuity in employment law. Is it a right or a benefit? The payment of gratuity is popularly known as the 13th cheque or Christmas bonus– in other words, a payment of gratitude by the employer to the employee in recognition of a job well done, or if you like, going the extra mile.  It must be understood that Labour Law is silent onthe question of bonuses. This means that the payment or non-payment of bonuses is a matter entirely for the employer to decide, and to negotiate with employees. If an employer who presently does not pay bonuses of any sort wishes to continue on that route he can do so, without fear of being accused of unfair labour practice. To elaborate on this issue, we’re joined by Galeboe Modisapodi, Employment Relations & Employee Benefits Consultant, Accredited Commercial Mediator who’s Partnered with Molatudi Advisory Services (MAS).
