As António Guterres approaches the end of his tenure as United Nations Secretary-General, the question of who comes next comes at a particularly consequential moment for the organisation. The UN is facing financial pressures, growing geopolitical divisions and questions about the strength of multilateralism itself, as countries increasingly assert their sovereignty and, in some cases, retreat from international agreements and institutions. So how much can the next Secretary-General actually change? What kind of political leadership does the UN need to remain relevant, credible and capable of bringing countries to the table in an increasingly fragmented world? And, perhaps most importantly, does the individual leading the UN still have the influence to shape global affairs? We’re joined by international relations analyst Donovan Williams to unpack what is at stake in the choice of Guterres’ successor, the challenges facing the UN, and the kind of leadership the organisation may need for the next chapter.
