The marvel that is modern Intensive Care has the capacity to save lives, and help survivors live long and satisfying lives.  But it comes at a cost, both in terms of patient experience and cost.

Anecdotally, the number of patients with life-limiting illnesses are being referred for management in the ICU.  This trend has given some clinicians pause to consider whether traditional ICU is the best place for their care.
