Behind Malaysia's Local Cinema Box Office Surge

View descriptionShare

Local films are outpacing Hollywood at the Malaysian box office this year. Finas data shows 7.55 million admissions for local titles through July, ahead of 6.94 million for Hollywood releases, with five local films crossing RM10 million each.

Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, CEO of Finas, and Lina Tan of Red Communications look at the story behind the numbers: the difficulty of making a high-quality production and, more importantly, turning a decent return. We get into what the local film industry needs to keep doing well, the gaps that need plugging, and who should actually own film IP. And finally, is there a problem of concentration in film distribution, and what can be done about it?
