Abandoned synagogues are hardly a place for visitors or tourists and represent a bygone era of Jews who have moved on or in some cases murdered or fled in the Holocaust. Artist Beverly-Jane Stewart has put together an exhibition of art that examines these synagogues. Based on etchings, the exhibit is called Knishta: A Treasured Past and is on display at Jerusalem’s old Shaare Tzedek hospital on Jaffa Road. Stewart, who specializes in oil paintings and prints, told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that her pieces juxtapose the synagogues past and devastation with a sense of resurrection today.
