Williamsburg County Schools Part II - A Student Perspective

At 27, Tina Hurley had it all; career, love, fitness...until a rare vascular disorder nearly took her mobility and, eventually, one of her legs.

Everyday life became a struggle, and hope felt out of reach. But Tina didn’t give up.

Through grit, community, and a fierce refusal to quit, she reclaimed her strength and her purpose. She founded Less Leg More Heart, a nonprofit helping amputees and trauma survivors through mentorship, medical advocacy, holistic care, and practical support—making sure the next person facing crisis never feels as alone as she did.

On this episode, we talk about resilience, transformation, and creating impact from tragedy. I also uncovered funding for Tina through the Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, which awards grants from $1,000–$20,000 to nonprofits where a little support makes a huge difference. Leadership is the key to success in every organization, and school districts are no exception.  Dr. Kelvin Wymbs is the superintendent of Williamsburg County School District in South Carolina, and he's on a mission to highlight and celebrate the students and teachers in his district.  In 2018, the South Carolina Department of Education took over control of the district due to academic and financial concerns, but that does not deter Dr. Wymbs, in fact that energizes him to focus on the positive, highlight the successes, and challenge his students and staff to exceed expectations.

Based on the 2022-2023 student enrollment data approximately 84% of the students are African American, 6% Caucasian, 1% Hispanic/Latino, 0.7% are Asian, 2.3 % are two or more races, and 6% are other. Students in grade PreK-12 attend one of the eleven schools. Williamsburg County is 934 square miles and home to two primary schools, three elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, and one career center.

This is Part 1 of an ongoing series to highlight and celebrate this school district's rise to fame!  Listen in and stay tuned because this district is an incredible example of resilience, persistence, and determination because positive energy CAN change everything if you simply believe and pursue your dreams and vision.
