Federal officials and a coalition of states say a proposed supermarket merger is doomed to fail if it's allowed to go through. A trial set for next month will determine whether Kroger, which owns about 2,800 stores will be allowed to acquire Albertsons, which owns about 2,200. The merger had been announced back in 2022, but the FTC sued to stop it, saying it would be bad for workers and consumers. The two chains tried to allay those fears, announcing they would sell off roughly 600 of those stores.
