With the multi-billion dollar injection into the skills sector last year and a growing recognition of its importance to the Australian economy, it’s important to acknowledge the role the VET sector plays in skilling Australians for jobs of the future. 

Wendy Blight, A VET trainer and Workplace Assessor at Charles Darwin University (CDU) in Alice Springs. She recently learned she is one of the Northern Territory's four finalists competing for the national Trainer of the Year Award, with the winner announced on September 18.

While Wendy trains a diverse range of students, including mature-age students who are looking "to upskill or sideskill" in their careers, much of her workload is devoted to VET in School students, ranging from Year 9 all the way up to Year 12, as well as students who have recently graduated high school. 

The CDU trainer, who was a keen learner but did not finish school as she wanted to get into the workforce, said that students are lucky these days as they can only enrol in vocational studies units to complete their studies, but also gain an important vocational skills that will give them a headstart in the workplace.

She also emphasised that VET studies, from certificate to diploma levels, can also provide a less daunting way of entering their profession of choice by gaining credits towards further tertiary study.
