WCPT 820 Interview: Kevin Schultz

View descriptionShare

Filling in for Patti Vasquez, Paul Chivari is joined by Kevin Schultz, professor of history at UIC and author of “Why Everyone Hates White Liberals (Including White Liberals): A History.

Schultz discussed the history of political violence in the U.S., highlighting the recent assassinations of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman as part of a broader trend. He identified three peak periods of political violence: post-Civil War, the 1960s and '70s, and the present. He noted the unique factor of the current Republican Party's embrace of political violence. Schultz expressed optimism, though, citing growing public opposition and civic engagement as signs of resilience. "I know times seem tough to a lot of Americans right now, but we've been there before, and our nation will continue," he told WCPT.
