Patti Vasquez is joined by Jon Marcus, higher-education journalist at The Hechinger Report and co-host of the public radio podcast "College Uncovered." His latest article is "Once globally preeminent, U.S. universities are sliding into decline."
In the conversation Marcus explains that U.S. universities are losing their global preeminence due to several compounding factors. While federal research funding historically propelled the tech economy, current threats include research funding cuts, visa delays, and social media screening. China has already surpassed the U.S. in producing STEM Ph.D.s, with a growth rate five times faster than the United States.
