How does the contemporary "God crisis" affect not only those who have left the Church, but also faithful believers striving to follow Christ today? On Driving Home the Faith, host Dr. Ken Craycraft welcomes Fr. Philip Devous, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church in California, Kentucky, to discuss his recent Substack reflection on secularization, ecclesial bureaucracy, and the modern spiritual landscape.

Fr. Devous expands on the theological concept of the "God crisis"—originally articulated by mid-century theologian Johann Baptist Metz and frequently referenced by Pope Benedict XVI. He explains how this crisis manifests in two key ways within the Church: a tendency to seek bureaucratic solutions rather than spiritual renewal, and a subtle form of idolatry where believers reshape Jesus into an image that aligns with personal preferences and individualistic culture. Fr. Devous and Dr. Craycraft also analyze how therapeutic culture, institutional scandals, and radical individualism tempt individuals into self-referential spirituality, emphasizing the urgent need to return to authentic divine revelation through scripture and sacred tradition.
