In this week’s Sports Spotlight, Paul Lachmann talks with Barrett Cohen, the new public-address announcer for Xavier University basketball. Barrett shares what it means to step into the shoes of legendary Xavier PA announcer Herb Bauer, whose voice became part of the tradition of Musketeer basketball for decades.
Cohen also reflects on his journey from announcing games as a grade-school student at St. James White Oak to working in high school sports, broadcasting, marketing, and sports information. He recounts his experience as one of the final four candidates for the San Diego Padres’ PA announcer position and how that opportunity gave him the confidence to pursue announcing on a larger stage.
The conversation also offers advice for young aspiring PA announcers: jump in, volunteer, don't be afraid of the microphone, and look for opportunities to make someone else's day better. Barrett credits his faith, God's grace, and the mentors who have helped him along the way as he begins this exciting new chapter with the Musketeers.
