DMV Spotlight on 12-21-25 shines a light on Gambling Addiction following a new study in Maryland finding that what is now called ‘disordered gambling’ impacts nearly two out of every 5 Marylanders who bet on sports. Guest Karen Duffy, Executive Director for the Maryland Coalition of Families explains recent legalization of online betting and the prevalence and ease of placing bets has led to a spike in at-risk behavior.
Duffy pointing to data from the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling that found the number of Maryland residents exhibiting disordered gambling rose 42% since legal sports betting was approved by the legislature in November of 2022.
Duffy says the Maryland Coalition of Families offers support for struggling families.
