ANC personell opened fire on the crowd, killing nineteen people. At the time, guards claimed that the IFP supporters were storming the building. SABC Radio News reporters were on the scene and the story was reported on throughout the day. Hendrik Martin was one of the reporters stationed at Library Gardens near Shellhouse.
