Today (Thursday, Sept 10) is 'World Suicide Prevention Day'.

Here in Waterford, a big event is taking place in The Tower Hotel this evening, organised by the Waterford and South East Samaritans.

One of the guest speakers is the renowned and award-winning writer, podcaster and commentator, Michael Harding.

This morning, Michael (who has spoken and written openly about his own mental health journey) was also one of the guests on 'Deise Today', speaking to Damien - along with Rory Fitzgerald from the Waterford and South East Samaritans.

Mario Rosenstock is perhaps best known for his iconic 'Gift Grub' but there's so much more to him too.

He's also just released a new book 'Gift Grub and Me: My Life in Comedy' which is published by Merrion Press and now on sale.

The death occurred on Monday evening of former Independent councillor Seamus O'Donnell.

He was elected to represent the Dungarvan-Lismore District at the local elections in both 2014 and 2019.

He had, before that, served as a member of the Fianna Fáil party. 

This morning (Wednesday) Damien spoke to two long-time friends of Seamus - Declan Terry and Michael Hogan, both from An Sean Phobal.

Tributes to late councillor Seamus O'Donnell RIP....

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have donated €150,000 to the three GAA clubs which are located closest to Strancally Castle in Co Waterford. 

It is the couple’s first Irish philanthropic donation since they bought Strancally Castle in August. 

The three clubs - Shamrocks GAA in Knockanore, Tallow GAA in Tallow, and Lismore GAA in Lismore - will each receive €50,000. The donations will be paid to the clubs over a two-year period, with each club receiving €25,000 per year.

Mark and Priscilla decided to donate to the three GAA clubs in Waterford that are closest to Strancally Castle as they are aware of the very significant role that the GAA plays in local communities in Ireland. As new members of the community in Waterford, they wanted to support these local clubs.

“The GAA is at the heart of communities across Ireland,” said Mark and Priscilla. “As new members of the Waterford community, we’re proud to support these local clubs and the important role they play.”

This morning on 'Deise Today', we spoke to representatives from Lismore GAA club, Shamrocks GAA club and Tallow GAA club to find out how they heard the good news - and what the donations will mean for them!
