What happens when the man accused of toxic masculinity is also being wounded by toxic masculinity?

In this revealing episode of the Dear Future Wifey Podcast, Ashley and Laterras R. Whitfield sit down with Shawn Best of Married at First Sight for an honest conversation about masculinity, intimacy, accountability, rejection, and the moments from his marriage that sparked intense conversation online.

Shawn opens up about being criticized for how he communicated with his wife, the controversial conversations surrounding sex and a husband’s “needs,” and why he now acknowledges moments when defending his intentions prevented him from recognizing the impact of his words.

But Ashley and Laterras take the conversation even deeper, exploring the other side of toxic masculinity: what happens when a man’s own masculinity and sexuality are questioned because his voice, personality, and emotional expression don’t fit society’s expectations of how a Black man should look, sound, or behave?

Can a man reject toxic definitions of masculinity while still carrying toxic behaviors into a relationship? When does confidence become ego? When does desire become entitlement? When does defending yourself become gaslighting? And can accountability lead to transformation without becoming shame?

This isn’t a conversation about canceling a man. It’s about decoding the behaviors, beliefs, wounds, and expectations that shape how men show up in relationships.

Because sometimes the strongest thing a man can do isn’t defend who he was. It’s confront who he was, heal what created him, and decide who he wants to become.

Ashley and Laterras R. Whitfield invite Shawn into a conversation that challenges all of us to reconsider what healthy masculinity really looks like.

This is “Decoding Toxic Masculinity.”
