Optional Memorial of St. Margaret of Scotland, 1045-1093; daughter of Hungarian and Anglo-Saxon royalty; they were shipwrecked on the coast of Scotland, and befriended by King Malcolm, who married Margaret; as queen, Margaret promoted arts and education, and encouraged church synods to correct religious abuses; Margaret and Malcolm had six sons and two daughters; she had certain times for prayer and reading scripture, she ate sparingly and slept little; she was always surrounded by beggars, and never refused them; Malcolm and his oldest son Edward were killed in battle; Margaret, already on her deathbed, died four days later
