Somebody called in their wife are just going to get a blood test and found that they couldn't get it done because Clintpath weren't accepting any forms that weren't clin Path forms. Now, usually you can just turn up, but that is not the case this morning because of what sounds like industrial action. Darcy's called into the program Morning, he dares he morning.
Thanks for taking the call.
No, not a problem, ma, because you've got some insight in this for us.
Yes, I was there Saturday morning with my wife getting a blood test, and the young girl informed us that we may see a slight change in how they do.
It because they were on strike.
Me, being a little bit nosy, sort of asked why.
She informed us that all the Clinpath collection sites were doing it because the staff were on the wrong award, meaning they were underpaid by about four bucks an hour, right.
And that they weren't doing anything on the computer moving forward. It was a hand off strike, and you know the staff were mainly going to go back to handwriting. So yeah, there's there's been some changes in how they do it. But then she's.
A I did some little bit and.
Nosey works as well, and the CEO of the parent company, Sonic Healthcare. He's on more than what the woolworths CEO was on.
Yeah, it's to print money at that joint. That's a good wicket. Hey, Darcy, thank you for that. We're getting so many texts from clinpath workers and at jails with what they're saying. They're not even getting my find this mind boggling. So some of these, some of these girls and guys are on twenty six dollars twenty an hour.
There's teenagers working as dish pigs in the back of Adelaide restaurants who are earning more money than that.
I have to go to a clin path pretty regularly near us, near the Western Hospital, and they terrific the staff there, but they are literally take blood that is for the purpose of making sure you're healthy, no disrespect to it making a coffee or pulling a beer.
Yeah, but it does seem slightly more essential.
Billy Elrich is the Health Services Union Secretary for South Stralia the Northern Territory. Billy, good morning to you've been listening in so this industrial action is it just for today?
Good morning? Thanks for having me on. No, it's on indefinitely. We're taking industrial action across HS members and collection centers, in the labs, administrative roles, and everywhere. We're doing this because, as you've rightly pointed out, these workers are paid extremely low, anywhere between twenty four bucks and twenty seven bucks an hour, and we want to see a better deal from Climpath to pay them more like thirty one dollars an hour as a starting rate.
I think the foundations of the dispute are understandable, Billy, but how can you guys make sure as you apply this industrial action not actually endangering people's lives if they need a blood test that's related to I don't know what you know that has to go to oncologist or something like that.
Absolutely, it's always at the forefront of our minds how we undertake industrial action with our impact and patient safety. There is an exemption to all of our bands, but if it's an urgent matter, such as those oncology patients that they see, there's no de way created or urgent matters are seen. So if you do need to go to a Climpath site it is an urgent matter, you will be seen. If it's not an urgent matter, as I'm sure you can understand a lot of tests can take some time. We do encourage you to go to either restraining clinical labs or essay pathology for your tests.
There are non urgent tests that people get done though, that end up very quickly becoming super urgent, and your action would be affecting them. I mean, there'd be people who have gone to the GP saying I feel a bit flat, and they might get their bloods back and something will be going wushka and they'll find out they've got bowel cancer or something.
Whether at the time of taking that test, the process it's going to be the same as it's non urgent, so you're going to an ATHL site or a SA PATH site won't result in any major the way.
How confident are you that cling Paths are going to come to the party on this look, because.
We've got some hope, but I'm not super confident they're going to move from their current position. They're actually putting an EA out to the vote. So we're doing this as sort of the last ditch attempt to bring them back to the bargaining table and give us a reasonable offer.
It feels like have you tried taking them the fair work because if they're paying that your work is two dollars less than the award, aren't they are they in breach of the law.
Look, it's a little bit more complex than that, and it's something that we may consider taking them to the schedule court for. It's obviously going to be a very lengthy and timely process. So we think it's much easier for Clinpath to recognize the wrong that's happened over the last few years, fix it in this upcoming EA, and put a decent wajor offer on the table.
Yeah.
Well, we never like to see inconvenience, but we also recognize that your members are being stiffed from the HSU. Thanks for joining us today.
I can't believe they get paid that little they're getting.
It's not just little, it's like that's when you look at penalties, the way penalty rates work for hospitality people and people in supermarkets are doing like a Saturday or a Sunday, like they genuinely getting bugger all money.
These people, as you say, this is the this is the front line of frontline healthcare. These are the one. This is your first port of call to find out something seriously might be wrong. You've got to be kind of good at what you do and care and be attentive, and they're getting paid as though they're you know, phlobotomists is apparently the name of the profession. Lucy tells me they're flobotomists. Flabotomists.
Want you want to pronounce that correctly? You wouldn't excidentally want to end up with the lobotomist, would you know? That's yeah, you go for a phlebotomy, what just knowing what doctor's handwritings like as well? You want to make sure you've got the right referral? Is that an hour or a pH
