David Cash on five double a Breakfast.
Six minutes to eight. Here the market economic Director, port Adelaide Football Club. So primo David Cash, our guest, what did you Cotchie?
Good morning?
Came great to have you on, Cosh. You look well. Cut to the chase, because it's been the talking point in the footy world and among a lot of the fans over the last couple of days. Was the succession plan a flawed idea and will you revisit it?
No, it's not a flawed idea and we won't be revisiting it at all. It is what it is. It is part of a plan that we developed over the preseason. We've been working towards it for quite a while. Look, I think you've got to separate the performance on the weekend, which was terrible. It was embarrassed seeing it was disappointing and better not flaming happen again this year. But football. We're not going to win every game in football, and every loss we have this year can't be linked to the succession play. Link it to performance and quite rightly criticize us for the performance last weekend because it was completely unacceptable and I think the proof's going to begin the bounce back this weekend and from then on.
It is the problem with it, though, that it makes losses much less manageable because it creates a perception that Ken is a lame dark and you've got Josh car waiting to get both hands on the operation and coaching his own, right.
I don't, but that is the outside opinion. It is not absolutely not the inside opinion. And remember, these two blokes have worked together for quite Ken has been Josh's mentor for a number of years. Has has constantly said Josh has all the abilities for a senior coach of the future, and he hoped that that senior coaching role would be at Port Adelaide. He has said that in the past. So both of them have worked together. They're terrific characters. They respect each other, and that is no different today than it has been over the last year or eighteen months.
Do you see do you consider it all Koshi, that perhaps rather than actually taking the air out of any speculation around the future of the coach, it's not going to it's playing out in the opposite.
Well, well, you could argue that we've been completely open and honest with our members and with the football community. That's you know, the the big criticism of a lot of clubs is, oh, you know, they keep things behind closed doors, they're not open about it, blah blah blah. Well here's a club that has been open about it and we get criticized for it as well. Fine soot and it totally totally Round one, oh my god, it's twenty four to go. But round two, you know, we've got a bounce back, and for a number of reasons, because this weekend a bit of history is being made in Travis Burke breaking Russell Lebert's all time record for games played for the Port Adelaide Football Club. Now it's one hundred and fifty five year old club. This record was set forty five years ago by Russell Leebert and people said it would never be broken. And on the weekend, a bit of forty five year old history is going to be broken by the most professional, remarkable footballer that you could ever meet in your life. So that's a real focus for us this weekend. An incredible credit to Travis spoke.
Been a wonderful servant. He's just a great champion of the football club and a worthy holder of a record like that. Koshi, Hey, just quickly before you go. We wanted to get your thoughts ahead of what was a bit of a surprise federal budget that's going to be held next week. A surprise in so far as I think the surprise of the Federal government would have liked to been out of call an election and not have to go through the process. But what are you intrigued by? What are you going to be looking at closely when it gets handed down on Tuesday.
I'm really intrigued at Treasury's forecast for the next twelve to twenty four months. Remember it was only a couple of weeks ago, but it looked as though this budget would get us back into surplus. Surprise increase in in income now a continuing deficit basically what they predicted in May is going to come about because of the uncertainty of what's happening glow with tariffs and inflation excuse me, and interest rates. So also it's going to be a blueprint for the economic credentials of the Labor government. I don't think there's going to be a lot of handout because they want to say to the Australian public we're responsible economic managers. We're not going to buy your votes. We've got a greater responsibility to look after the economy and you for the future, and I certainly hope they do that and everyone recognizes it.
Well, Da've goodluck for Saturday, and as you rightly said, it's worked out nicely that you have got the home game for Travis Fokes. Record breaking match and beating a name as esteemed and hallowed as are Ebert is no mean feat. So good luck to Travis and I'm sure that you guys will give him the recognition that he actually deserves on the day. Thanks for joining us, mate, all right, guys, thanks for having me.
