The Great Salt Lake Needs 9 More Feet

Utah's record snowfall has raised the Great Salt Lake a foot, but that's nine feet short of what the Lake needs to survive. Dave and Debbie discuss how Utah has treated the lake like a line of credit, and now the state is taking action on the edge of its collapse. Rare earth minerals like lithium exist in the lake and add pressure to conservation efforts. BYU Professor of aquatic ecology Ben Abbott, who helped compile the report that predicted the Lake's 5 year lifespan, joins the show to discuss which conservation efforts will help the Lake most.

Spanish Fork is FitCity

Mayor Mike Mendenhall of Spanish Fork speaks to a new mental and physical health initiative in Spanish Fork. Mayor Mendenhall also discusses a proposal on capitol hill that would require golf courses to share their water use.  Unlike other utah towns, Spanish Fork residents pay per gallon of gray water and the golf course runs off of an efficient, automated system. Dave and Debbie discuss how the city's efforts lead the way on water conservation efforts across the state.

Cancer diagnosis prompts a rise in Radon testing in Utah homes

Since a Nephi woman discovered her house's radon levels gave her terminal cancer, radon testing kits have flown from the shelves. The radioactive substance collected in her basement and gave her the equivalent of three cigarette packs a day of lung deterioriation. Ladd Egan from KSL 5 TV covered the story and details how Utahns can check their own homes and respond to higher radon levels.

How are Utah Universities preparing for Chat GPT?

High school students use it to write papers in seconds, and colleges are worried. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence program that can take inputs like "five paragraph essay" and "civil war" to produce high quality, human-looking writing. How will this affect the admissions and academic processes at universities? UVU Associate Professor Armen LLikchyan of Technology Management clarifies how colleges are preparing for this new era of machine learning.

Student Success and Growth in Nebo School District

KSL in Your Community: A History Temple and Theatre in Spanish Fork

The annual Festival of Colors draws thousands of visitors to Spanish Fork's Radha Krishna temple. However, according to President of Utah's Krishna Temples Charu Das, that just scratches the surface of what the temple offers for worshipers and visitors alike (llamas potentially inclued). Angelus Theatre has been a mainstay in Spanish Fork culture since its founding in 1912. The building has undergone a number of face lifts, and most recently, retransitioned from an abandoned movie theater to a vibrant stage theatre. Curt Gordon, current owner of the Angelus, joins the show to explain the history and future of the iconic cultural hub.
