Cocoa powder is an unsweetened chocolate product that adds deep chocolate flavour to desserts and beverages. Cocoa powder occurs when the fat, called cocoa butter, gets removed from the cacao beans during processing. The leftover dried solids get ground into the product sold as cocoa powder.
Cocoa was first cultivated in ancient South America. During the Age of Exploration, the Spanish Conquistadors introduced it to Europe.
In the 1850s, steam-powered machines allowed for the mass production of cocoa powder. Today, over 4.5 million tons of cocoa are consumed around the world every year.
The powder provides many potential health benefits, and helping us discover these benefits, is Dr. Gus, who is passionate about natural forms of medicine.
