This month two high profile cases heard how insanity was used as a defence in separate shocking deaths. 

Julie Flood was found not guilty of her father's murder by reason of insanity while Christina Anderson was convicted of the manslaughter of Gareth Kelly by reason of diminished responsibility.

But how does an Irish court assess insanity? And what factors are taken into account when coming to a decision.
