John Lenley Eric and Lyle Menndez, convicted in nineteen ninety six for the nineteen eighty nine murders of their parents, will appear in court December eleventh for a resentencing hearing that could potentially open the door for their release. The Los Angeles County Superior Court date set by Judge Michael Jesseck follows a recommendation by District Attorney George Gascone, who suggested the brothers be eligible for parole under a new sentence of fifty years to life. This decision considers their young ages at the time of the crime and their educational and rehabilitative efforts in prison. Both men, now in their fifties, have completed several degrees and initiated programs for inmates, including a beautification project led by Lyle Meanndez. While their lawyers maintain the brothers acted in self defense following years of alleged abuse by their fathers, some family members, as well as certain voices within Gascone's office, oppose the resentencing. If the judge agrees to it, the Menendez brothers would still need approval from the state Parole Board WI each. California Governor Gavin Newsom would have one hundred and fifty days to review the board's decision. This case has resurfaced in public interest, partly due to a recent Netflix series highlighting the brother's story. Governor k Newsom recently discussed the case on iHeartRadio, mentioning that Gascon's recommendation and public opinion are under review.
