Local government elections are just over a week away and today we take a closer listen to some of what was said at Monday night’s Byron Meet the Candidates.
Whether it’s the carpark at Main Beach, building on flood plains, or the value of name-dropping in campaigns, we weigh up some of the stakes to consider in this year’s Byron Shire election.
Echo co-publications co-editor Aslan Shand joins us to compare and contrast some of the candidates’ responses to questions from the community and dig deeper into the issues raised, along with outgoing Independent Byron Shire Councillor Cate Coorey.
The outgoing Independent highlights some of her experiences over the past eight years serving on the council, from development at West Byron to the Wallum Estate, policies on water sensitive urban design and climate change and not to forget, compulsory leg-ropes for surfers.
She also shares some thoughts on comments made in the media about some of this year’s candidates by other local government figures, a recent trend Aslan Shand describes as ‘getting personal’ in the election campaign period.
