Join us for the September edition of Community Connections here on WTIC 1080AM!

Vice President of Marketing and Development at United Way Maura Cook is joined by two guests. Her guests are Taniqua Huguley, Director of Economic Mobility at United way and Jessica Vargas, the Network Relations Representative from Connecticut Foodshare go over the data revealed in the latest ALICE Report.

ALICE stands for Assets Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. This report sees how much a family needs to make in order to cover their basic needs. Cook explains that to survive in Connecticut, a family of four (two young children and two adults), would need two full-time jobs at $24.81 per hour each. However, 60 percent of the top 20 jobs in Connecticut paid less than $20.00 per hour. The pandemic funding families previously had access to have run out or are about to. This has only added to the struggles these families face daily

Huguley explains the resources the United Way is providing for families.  Some of these resources are: budget coaching, resume building, Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA), and workforce development training.

Vargas of Connecticut Foodshare, explains how many people many not consider what families go through with health challenges (i.e. medical insurance) and nutrition needs when the funds are low.
