Westland High School to reopen Thursday after one-day closure due to 'potential safety issue'

View descriptionShare

Westland High School will reopen Thursday with increased security after South-Western City Schools officials decided not to open Wednesday based on information from law enforcement, the district said. In a letter to parents, the district said information was received from law enforcement about a "potential safety issue" and due to the timing of the information, the district made the decision to close the school Wednesday. The district said the decision was made "out of an abundance of caution" and to allow district leaders to meet with law enforcement "to develop a plan to ensure safety moving forward." According to information provided to The Dispatch by law enforcement, the threat was related to a shooting that occurred near the high school over the weekend. The situation is isolated to the high school and parents of students at other buildings should not be concerned, police said.
