Summer looks vaguely different this year — and will in years to come — at Ye Olde Mill, the Velvet Ice Cream headquarters in Utica. The family-owned company, which employs nearly 200 people, announced in June it would be closing all ice cream production at the Utica facility and outsourcing to a Midwest manufacturer. The move also led to the layoff of 15 employees in manufacturing positions — the first layoff in company history that wasn't seasonal, according to a spokesperson for Velvet. For both Utica locals and out-of-town tourists, the Velvet headquarters is a destination.
