Federal prosecutors warned scammers to think twice before attempting to bilk residents with coronavirus-related schemes, saying there’s plenty of space in federal lockups for those caught in the act. The list of potential scams includes fake medical bills, websites offering free coronavirus test kits to those who pay for shipping and handling, and unsolicited messages purportedly from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization, has directed federal investigators in his district to disregard the dollar amount or the number of victims when considering potential prosecutions. That means that cases that might normally end up in city or county courts will be pursued in federal court. Nationally, prosecutors are urging residents to report suspected coronavirus-related schemes to the National Center for Disaster Fraud at 866-720-5721.
