Records: Ohio prisoner died after 'altercation' with staff

View descriptionShare

Before he collapsed and died, 55-year-old Michael McDaniel got a serious beating at the Corrections Reception Center in what state prison officials describe as an "altercation" with staff, newly released records show. The Franklin County Coroner said the manner of death was homicide and ruled the cause of death was "stress induced sudden cardiac death," according to an autopsy received through a public records request. The autopsy details blunt force injuries to his head, face, shoulders, wrists, hands, knees, feet, toes and abdomen. The coroner found bruises the size of index cards on his knees, an 8-inch by 4-inch scrape on the side of his face, a 1-inch cut near his left eye, a busted lip, bleeding within his scalp and big bruises on his abdomen. Twelve weeks after his Feb. 6 death, Ohio DRC placed three employees – Lt. Bruce Brown and corrections officers Heath Causey and Kristy Judd – on paid administrative leave.
