Former Ohio State basketball player and East High School legend Granville Waiters passes away at age 60

Granville Waiters, a basketball star at East High School who went on to play for Ohio State and then in the NBA, has died, The Dispatch has confirmed. Waiters, 60, was found at his home Tuesday morning. The cause of death was unknown as of Tuesday evening. His passing leaves a 6-foot-11 void in the community where he has grown, worked and mentored people of all ages and walks of life. A star at East, Waiters helped lead the program to the 1979 Class AAA state title, and as a senior and team captain at Ohio State, Waiters averaged 10.4 points and 7.5 rebounds. He was a second-round pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1983 NBA draft and traded to Indiana before his rookie season in exchange for a second-round pick. Among many other community activities, Waiters was known to spin tunes as a DJ and was most recently listed as the owner of Granny’s Child Care Center on Livingston Avenue.
