OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus both have a program that provides blood alternatives to people who don’t want blood transfusions or treatment with blood products. This is mostly done for religious reasons for Jehovah’s Witnesses, who say Biblical teachings command them to abstain from blood products. Medications and nutritional supplements to increase hemoglobin levels are often given to a patient before a bloodless surgery. Tools and techniques are also used during surgery to safely lower blood pressure and minimize bleeding.
