All right, we back another episode of Club five twenty podcasts. I'm the host, my name is DJ Wells. We got a special special guest.
In the building.
Yo vet a legend. To my left, Man, we're gonna introduce my man's last to my far left. We got my dog. Bishop be hearing out the pre legs. How you was nasty, cool and nasty. Let's get to a baby.
Let's see Bibby.
Normally he come to work and you know how to struggle, and he come to work with the black forces of the White Lacey. But he had to tell them we're gonna let him work out in the prime time today.
You know what I'm saying, Man, shout out to prime Man.
He got the t and though both all day. He started off to my right, my dog young not your young tea.
Got you what Man, I'm chilling and I had to put some Jordans on for team down Man. Yes, sir, my God showed me so much loving Onlon. I'm so high for this episode.
My o, G.
I'm gonna let you do the honest. DJ and Man for show Man.
Listen Man, one of my favorite players of all time, man before the Steph Curry he was the cod is Light skinning point guard. Ever man got a long time NBA fed sneaker fishing out. We got the man Mike Bibby in the building. Appreciate you slide on this, big dogs.
Y'all, haven't man, I've been. I told Jeff, Jeff, you got to get me on there man. Soon I called him. I was wondering if you I'm surprised you have the same fucking number.
Yeah, I don't switch up too much.
And I called him, I said, Jeff, I need to get on there, man, So you know, I appreciate you getting me on here.
Show man.
We excited.
I mean, I tell everybody that's the best teammate og I had.
He showed me love, he showed me the roads.
Fucked up too, because real because I wasn't the guy. I wasn't the bit that I wanted to be. Because that's some ship in the upper management going on. When they draft, I'm like, damn, they're trying to get me out of here. They got a point guard. I didn't really know much about you when you came, but when you came, I knew a matter of time he was gonna, you know, eventually take it over. But I mean, I feel like I didn't give I gave you a little bit. I didn't give you all that I think I should have, just because the ship that was going on.
Man now, but you used to always tell me, like my rookie year, you showed me love. I really have to pay for nothing I have to I was out whatever I had to do. You made sure I was okay. But you always told me, like, your time gonna come. You enjoyed mind used to be like, yo, your time gonna come. Don't worry about the big because I wasn't playing. You like, don't trip about it. Your time gonna come. He was like you, like, you're gonna replace me. And as a young dude, I couldn't understand that. I'm like many he keeps saying that, bro, I want to play right now. And then as I got older, I was like, dang, I know what Bigby was talking about.
See, but what what do you always what? He started me out of respect? You know what I mean? There was times, you know, when I first got there, you know it was time. But the second year, halfway through the second year is like, okay, I'm trying to I'm starting to wind down. But then even in the third year, he had to start me just out of respect, you know what I mean. And even when I went to New York, he was like, I wanted to play me and start me. I'm like, what he I'm done. I was done like two years ago. I'm not trying to play right now. So I mean, that's just the way what he was, you know, just out of respect he would starting me. And like I said, I knew your time would come. Man. You took over that team and led that team to the next playoffs when it was coming.
So I appreciate it. Man.
I did learn a lot though, Like I couldn't shoot, like, but the pocket passing and stuff like, I learned that all from him. He taught me how to play with Al Horford for so like. But he's like, hey, this is how you gotta get out open. You hit this pocket past hour, you'll get an assist every time.
And I was like, yeah, I remember the one time he was in practice and I you know, I mean I I catched the ball from it. You know, they make a standing this close to me. I said, Jeff, what do you do? He's like, man, they told me to pick you up full court. I said, for fucking You're gonna try to work and practice. I'm trying to say this ship for the game. Man, I'm just like, come on, I just throw that ship to Joe. Joe smooth, go ahead, y'all. I mean like, as soon as I kind of about to turn around and walking up the court, he's standing. They just told me to pick you up full court. I got to pick you up. Come on.
Every practice too, man, practice for sure.
That might cut my years down. Problem, yeah, Man, Like, come on, man, just pick me up at half Man, I'm gonna come down and swing it, and I'm gonna be the fifth option. You know what i mean. Come to me. I'm gonna shoot it.
So man, we got we got to the origins.
Man.
Like I said, Man, your basketball career is crazy, especially with today's climbing with the nil and stuff.
How good you were in high school?
Man?
You the cash there early.
I would have liked a little bit. Man. I didn't need the five million that they're getting now, but I would I could have took a couple of thousand, a couple when you're coming from nothing, we couldn't even get a slice of pizza. You were there when you couldn't even get a slice of pizza for free. Fact. So man, it's good, like the money they getting there, and it's good. But when you get paid more than the coach, that's crazy. Nothing. If I'm playing man and I'm making more than the coach, coach won't be able to tell you anything.
Yeah, especially sixteen seventeen.
Yeah, come on, man, But it's about time to get them. They deserve the money, man, deserve it.
But if you was to get paid you, how much you think you would have got? Liked to go to Arizona from out here?
I think it's been a lot. Everybody always talks about how much money I got from going to Arizona.
I didn't.
I didn't get a dime go to Arizona. No, I believe I know you got some money.
Not when I got there, I got some money. I didn't get none to go there. But when I got there, I definitely made my around.
Maybe about eight yeah, for sure to get But he was the number one, number one point guards class. He was a Gatorade Player of the Year ninety six.
Looking at these guys now, like you're getting some backups and stuff now making a million two million, That was the guy the football player from Texas, the backup.
You're talking about talking about taking like.
Three million dollars. Ain't play the game yet.
That's many.
Clearly everybody known Henry was like the most Henry. The most money Henry ever made in the season was seventeen thousand.
Wrong, man, what thousand?
The NBA dem are Oh yeah, but they they owe some of the old guys.
They definitely do.
You definitely do for Henry on and clear seventeen. It's crazy.
That's we're playing with Maurice Cheeks, doctor j Doug Collins, yeah, se Darryl Dawkins. So you have a lot of guys with him.
That's a squad. Yeah, but you can't hoop it and have to have a part time job. That's that's.
That's crazy.
A lot of them was like that back then.
It was so like we said, man, we in Arizona and what you did in the shorts man like legendary stuff, and man, we got to you know, we talked about shoes on here, man, and what you do for the shoe game.
We just got to start there.
How was that to be at like that school where they was like the insight for all the dope shit.
We really weren't. We were just you know what happened. I'm gonna tell you the story of how we got the phones we got. So back then, everybody always like if your uniform was written white, you wore the same color as a uniform as white, you know what I mean. So the Nike guy comes before the tournament and was like, hey, I got a shoe for you guys. It's not out yet and it's not your color. But soon as you say it's not out yet, I said, I don't care what color you need them I need. So they gave one pair of everybody on the team. Some of the guys warm, someone didn't. And I just think that me wearing them and being on the court all the time kind of set it off for me and winning the championship. And you know, Penny was pissed that we wore the shoes before him, so he didn't get a chance to wear it, but so we got to wear him before him, so I don't think he ever even wore those ones that we had.
And it was crazy because he was just like, man, it'd been one thing. You know, I'm saying how it worked out. He was like, well, man, I seen my signmon and my shoe before me.
He was he was. They told us too, But I mean it made the shoe blow up, made the shoe iconic. Yeah, so what else can you ask for with that happened?
I'm surprised, like you didn't go with like Nike full well, I know you with Nike with Jordan's, but like how you deal with those shoes and how the phones blew up, I'm surprised.
I ain't see, like, man, let's do this.
But I mean, it wasn't like it isn't like it was back then how it is now, you know, stuff like that. But Jordans and pun was only two shoes that came at me. Nike didn't really come at me. So damn Pune was giving the most money out at that time, and they, you know, we got Puma, so it was like a million dollars or something it was giving out. And so they sent me a box and I opened the box. I was like, man, I can't. The shoe was like this long and it was just had the Puma thing on the side. It was like, I mean, it was like the clock. I said, I can't. I said, I told him. I called my agent, I said, Dave, I can't wear this, and he was like, you want to go with I could probably get you. Would you wear Jordan's I said, fucking right. That's when he put it on there, so it was a done deal. So I was I was with Jordan for my whole fourteen year career.
Damn, that's funny because you almost had a situation with Puoma. Oh yeah, I did almost go with Poma. This was some you know, they was a little.
Bit more updated.
Because nobody was in basketball. Yeah, that was basketball stuff going on. They sent me soccer ship. It was like all florescent colors in ninety Florescan wasn't really it back then.
Yeah, it was gonna be their first Freddy I do no.
But I got a crazy story about when I was ten years old when y'all played in Indianapolis the Final four. Yeah, I met you. We're at Yeah, you was coming getting on the bus. We was outside. I told you all was the badass kid. So he was out there and we was like, yo, you can sign this, and you signed a paper for me and I was like, yeah, that's when you became like. I was like, I like Mike Bibby because you signed the paper. Mike Bibby is cool, cool, cool. I was ten years old.
You would have been younger than that. I was, what because I was eighteen?
Okay, so I be like eight yeah something in Indianapolis.
Yeah, steak and shake after the game.
Yeah, right, that's when you sign my order. Girl. I'll never forget that.
Then, when I fast forward, I remember telling my mom because my mom remember too. And when I got drafted, I was like, there was like Mike Bibby on the team.
I was like, damn.
It was like, yeah, Mike's starting guard. He's gonna be coming back because you just had signed a new deal with him. He's gonna be coming back. He's going to teach you the ropes and stuff. And I was like, damn, I got his autograph when they played in the final.
That's crazy.
They was like what year was that?
Seven?
Yeah?
He was like you should tell him that, And I was like.
I had a cold college saying because that following year, y'all went to the DIY, y'all go to the Elite eight.
We got our ass kicked by Utah.
Yeah, y'all lost by Utah, but you had a killer game. I think you had like nah before that, I guess Maryland. I think had like twenty six I believe out of Maryland.
And then yeah, they put a they put a triangle in two on us in Utah, so like they said, you know, I think he talked to so the coach was Majerial's right, and he talked to an NBA coach, I forget what you want, and he was he said, try this defense, and he said, like if the other guys would have hit some shots, that he would have got out of it. But some of our other guys everybody was called that game. He lost, but like I think he almost loved, like twenty five Yeah yeah, Doleiac yeah yeah, but they beat the sh out of us.
Miller was killing and he probably still somewhere killing somebody in the open gym, open LF.
It's still probably handed out work.
Is that what you knew? Like, yeah, I'm done with this ship.
Yeah, I think the game was over there that they kept asking me the question. I already knew what I was gonna do. I mean, there's nothing else from your dude.
You know.
They wanted me to leave my freshman year and then I was like, I'm not ready, man too, I'm not ready mentally physically, not and then after my sophomore I was like, Ship, I'm ready, Now.
Would you play the year at the conference your freshman year?
No, sophomore sophomore year, yeah, sliphomore year after I was, And that's why I knew it was time to go.
What you think you would have win if you left your freshman year you think would have been.
I mean probably think I probably would have went the first round. I don't know, like that Ship that was a I.
And then yeah, I was just wondering, Yeah, drafted duck.
Yeah that's what I said.
It was a good right decision. That was yeah smart. I just wonder if you thought you.
Go, Like, no, I wasn't ready. I wasn't ready. I knew I wasn't ready. That's what I was, just like, fucking, I'm gonna stay. I'm gonna stay, man, get another year and go on killing and see what I gotta do because I was My girl got pregnant that that summer, so like shit, I got him making now you know what I'm saying.
So damn that's real. And what's crazy is I mean we're gonna jump back around, but your pe game. But the George was so crazy. I had a homeboy.
Shout out to my homide Dre when you see is he gonna laugh?
He had got a pair of pees from somebody that he had had that I ended up getting them from him, the nine lows, the white and purple. One of my prize was just I've ever had from the shoe, what's one of your favorite pees you had because you had a lot of heat.
Either say the nines or the thirteen's, those are probably the best ones. I mean, those are the most comfortable ones to play in. Kill my feet, I mean, but now they do but exactly different. Yeah, so if you're playing them now, you're used to playing the comfortable shoes. But I mean they were all low. So, like the loads came about because at the beginning of the season, they'll send you like a little booklet with all the shoes they're gonna have you wear during the year, and it was all, you know, the fives and nines and everything, and I was just like, can mak them a low top? And they were like, yeah, we're probably making them low top. So that's when me and Derek Anderson started getting those low tops and they started cutting everything in the fives, the two's, the nines, thirteen's everything. So it kind of just played out and it's just like, you know it, just give us all the low tops.
That's fire. So y'all really basically started the low twos and all that stuff.
You could probably say that, yeah, because I mean because no one else in the in the brand was wearing loads, said me.
And Dad said, yeah, talked about that. Yeah.
So man, it's just I mean, it was good. The thing was good about it is that you get the shoes like two months early and just wear might you can not now, but I mean the players that get that are playing now get them earlier. You know, they kind of say you just a little bit to the end, but you know they still take care of me. Get a box every month, so it's good.
Shout out to j B. I mean, that's crazy. You know, Jeff is a crazy snick here. So baby being your team mat you know what I'm saying.
It was Adidas when you was.
When I first got there, I was Nike, and then I went to Adidas. I remember when I was we was playing, y'all, one time I had Adidas on.
He was like, man, what the fuck? But when I first got there, I had Nikes, but I was.
I used to look at his and his claws and his little cubby they had at the Mareen iced to looking there and that used to go to the backward back I get them.
He'd be like, he's gonna kill me. Man, I could not touch those.
You could have had anything you want, but I used to be scared because you used to be so like nah, You'd be like you could have them and be team Jordan.
You took careful.
P though, like because you was like your PE's was hard at that time. I had you got the red and white twelve p M.
And I was like maybe.
He was like no, man.
Was like, only got one.
I was like ship and the high Top. I didn't. I didn't plan. I still got him.
Yeah, they was hard. I was like can I get through? You're like nah, not the And then he came out the back like you can have these though. I swear that I got Him'm gonna show y'all because he signed him. He's like, you had these, it's a lot say something. Jump, I'm gonna see your picture I got.
I was like they hard.
I was like they they pease, but they only gave like the thirteen's and the twelve they gave us, but it's only like two pair of Yeah. I remember Joe was with them too, so kind of gave us like the same. They give us different colors, but it was like two.
Of each now.
But you showed me enough love with the Sneakers when you gave me that twenty fifth anniversary Peck. I was like, I came over your crib and he was like, all right, man, go ahead. I'm like what he's like, you can get get them. I started picking up something. He's like, hold on, I need to keep them.
It was like the all white teams. She's like, no, he was with Nike.
Man, he'd have got anything he wanted.
I wasn't big enough yet, Na, but it's all of He always showed me a little though.
So for show Man, we gotta talk about your career. Obviously, you know something knows you the Arizona. Then you get to the league. Man, you got to go to Memphis and you know what I'm saying, cooperc was he was the Grizzlies.
How was that that first preson? Just going from you know what I'm saying, Zona the candidate.
Again, our ass kicked every night ship. We started out. It was a fifty game season that year. So we started out.
Four and four.
Guess so we ended up.
I'm scared to say, you know what, forty two.
So we went through. Damn. We had three double digit losion streaks in the fifty game season.
Shout out to the Belbie.
It was fucked up because, I mean we were in a lot of games. We were just we were young, our to our our vets, our superstar players. Reeves he was twenty three, twenty you know what I mean, those are a superstars, so we no one really knew how to win, you know what I mean. So we're being games. Just at the end, we'll fold.
Jerseys was tight.
Yeah he wasn't back then though.
Yeah, look was hard.
The black ones are nice. Was hard, but the white and the Till we used to be like, man, we hate wearing this ship.
Man, listen, I ain't gonna hold you that till grizzy y that's like a light blue fellow dr our respect. I hate that y'all lost every game. The biggest show, how good was at that time?
He was a bucket? Yeah, any time you get it, I mean, he was he was just his his He could score on anybody, you know, up he could, he could take you, he could shoot the jumper. He was just young, man, Like for you to be that young and have to lead a team, especially when you're that bad, Like I mean, all our all our events were guys from teams that no one like, Like they gave up, you know what I mean. Yeah, I mean it was tough going into the a team like that and have your superstars being your best players and no one could lead the right direction, you know what I mean?
How do you feel about him and Tim Thomas? Who do you think was better?
I mean I have to go with Sif Man high school. Tim Thomas was an animal.
Stories behind so want to.
But I mean, like just from being being close to Sharif and watching him play, I'd have to go with Street because I mean it was like effortless, you know, averaging twenty some points is his first year and just keeping the same face and you know, I mean, just just just going buckets.
So yeah, he was wrong brief man, Okay, sure, man, you know what I'm saying.
I had some tough times with the Grids and real tough, and then you got to it when you went to Sacramento.
I won more games than sacrament in my first year than three years.
And that.
I'm not even I was like, borderline sixty your first year we won sixty. We won sixty two games my first year in Sacramento, and I know we didn't win that in three years in Vancouver becuse I added up. We got eight, Like started putting the fust to count. Fifty eight games in my three years compared to sixty two in one year in Sacramento.
What was like?
What was that like?
When getting a chance to go to Sacramento with See Webb and those guys and the team that was on the verge of already being good, and then you go there and you make them great?
It was It was like kind of unbelievable because I knew the rest of peace. Michael Hya, he was the owner of the team my last year Vancouver. He was like, you know, we're gonna move to Memphis next year, We're gonna start fresh. We want to get you a spot because a lot of own you already know, Jeff, a lot of owners are ain't gonna come tell you they're gonna put you wherever the hell they want to put you in to make them better. So he came to me, he's like, where would you if we trade you, where would you want to go? He's like, give me your top five places. So I gave him, Like you know, I gave Phoenix because I'm from here. I gave Sacramento. I might even give him Indiana and tell you truth, because I mean they was back then. They was kind of like to one of the top teams. So I wanted to go in to be on a good team. And he's like, well, where's the number one team you want to go? And I told him I said Sacramento. And so I didn't hear nothing about it again until I got traded. So I was out. I was at the gyms like midnight and I'm working out. So my brother's like, you know, dang dings to everybody, No dang. So he get a call they just traded your brother Sacramento. So he's like, they just traded your sacrament said well shit, that wouldn't I would have heard about. So I went to my car. You know, got the Vancouver number, you got the Sacramand number. Like something happened. And so going there, I didn't know how the fans would take me in, how the team would take me in, replacing you know, Jay Will and I mean they made me feel like I was there my whole my whole career. Man. That's it just made the so easy just to go in there and play and just be accepted and just made it easy for me.
And what's so crazy, Like the team that y'all had would have been so good in today's are y'all kind of like set the trend for it, like y'all change, like the way that they play, especially adding you y'all would have went crazy in this I mean I went crazy in that era too, But y'all would have been so good now, especially with the position because I think Chris Webbits was one of the most underrated players.
Ever is probably one of the best superstars I played with, probably him, him and Mellow, iould say, but just going there the thing that the thing Webb held himself accountable, So that kind of trickled down that everybody that what made it so good to where it wasn't pointing fingers at anybody and doing that. But he always he fucked up. He was I was like, shit, that's not bad. I'm gonna get it right, and that kind of opened the thing. Well, you know what web could say, it I could say, you know what I mean, So that's kind of trickled down made it so good. Blotti was I think Vadi was the leader on that team. I kind of going to Atlanta. I kind of brought Vloody style to Atlanta. You know, I come and you know, beggame about the table or when we land where we're gonna eat. We're gonna go stop and eat it somewhere. Everybody coming, you know what I mean. So that's what kind of made us, you know, feel comfortable with each other on the court. You gotta be you gotta be friends off the court, man in order to be a good team.
Yeah, yeah, that's they should hear that. We part of you know what I'm saying.
Been around this week, heard them from a couple players said like that, real chemistry is.
Off the court. If you can get on off the court, if I ain't rocking, it's evident when when she gets real over the court.
For sure.
I was one of the most unselfish teams that I saw pass that had two leap passing big.
That was crazy. Then I had my most underrated six man, Bobby Jack that was my guy on to live.
He gets that thing up, but he was looking to do nothing else. Get that fu up, bro my god too, he shoot that bitch.
But all the players actually had though, Like Geral Wallace on the bench, you got he You had all these guys you played with Insac.
Jared was nineteen at the time too, Damn he just came from high school. But I mean, it was just like everybody was okay with whoever score, as long as he was winning. It wasn't like I've been on teams were like if you don't if I don't get my points, I'm gonna be on the plane shitty, you know what I mean. And there was never a time when that happened in Sacramento. Not one time.
Paigeon was putting that my fuck up there. Yeah.
Remember he's six ten too, Soarli is too. He was sixteen.
It was nice clip elite. He was super nice. But people don't know how tall he is.
Yeah he was about six eight.
Yeah, but he he was the reason why that Magic team was so good. People talking like people sleep him. Paying a six eight point guard for the team changed that whole situation with them.
He's a funny motherfucker too, man, understand he says, he said.
Now you speak about your like your way of leading.
Like when I first got in the league, like I took everything so serious, like for the game, I was like, I want to play like we had preseason games. I'm all serious and I'll never forget our first preseason game. Wood is talking and you take a piece of paper and.
You like boom and it hit Wood And I'm like, I never forget.
Because I was so like listening to what was saying, like like I'm in college, like ready to run through a wall.
He like, let's go out there and play good. You like piece of paper. I was like, I was like, we got it, man. He was like Mike, you know how it was with you. They was like brothers.
Probably one of my favorite coaches. So look at this story with Woody. Right, So I'd always go into Woody's office. I don't know if you were there yet. Were you there? We almost spot somebody in the locker room. Look, he pulls me in and pulls that's crazy. He pulls me in the office like before before the shooting around. He's like, hey, you think I should start go try to start a fight with somebody and there's a light of fire on their ass. I'm like, you gonna make sure you picked the right out there. I don't have to get your ass. He comes in there. I think he started going that mom. Yeah, so he started so he started talking ship, but then he thinking his coach is going to hold him back. But Moe got up out of see they had to hold mo back and then and was about to whoop his ass, and then he took me. We got done. He went in the back in the office. He's like, that was good right there to Ship. You're lucky motherfucking back because he was about to fuck you up.
The way you bro.
Was easy to MoU was easy to get the most here. That's why were you there when they made him grows hair out until it comes to my last year.
Oh that would have been crying that bullshit.
So we got some old hair, you know, you see more been a ball since like eighty seven. Moa was my guy up. So so we get there, so we put it get we put it back together and me Joe and Smooth will give you ten thousand dollars for every month you grow your hair. So he comes out this ship about that high and so nappy ship. So we like he growned it though. You know what I mean like we didn't think it could grow. So remember we were in Phoenix before they traded me. So was in walk through. I was saying, I was like, today's the trade deadline. If anybody owe anybody money, but get that ship today because we don't know who's gonna be here tomorrow. They traded him. He's got traded with me to Washington, and so I asked him. I asked him, like a month ago, then, did anybody pay you? He said, ship, you don't want to pay me. They didn't give you. He can grew share out for nothing, but I'm one that paid him. Yoh.
He used to mess with Mo so much. They used to play this ru UFC game before practice all the time. They would whoop his every day. I'll be coming in, I'll be listening to him.
Best with him every day, like.
Mo fucking suck. Remember the shoes so he used to wear this trying. I hate working with my God. Yeah, I love about but he he coming with trunners, remember the Jordan trunners. Trunners. Damn, come on, man, you got socks something?
No shows.
I'm like, come on, man, you gotta put something on man.
Them just take over.
Now play NBA games in there.
I love Mo, but the last thing about because I love he was cool. He was super cool. But they hung his outfit up.
What they hung it up in the locker room, Bro, from the top of the ceiling, Bro with the pain shirt like he hung it up.
Bro.
MO came in from shooting. Oh my god, I lost it. Bro. He was so mad and he had these true religion.
Ya returned.
Was so funny, Yo, has your bro like I hang over outfit up? Look at this ship and they just had it hanging terrible my fun but that ship was so funny.
Bro.
That was about rookie year. I couldn't believe. It's the NBA. Bro, what's going on?
You gotta have fun, man, You with each other for nine months. You gotta make the best of every situation you're with. You're with the guys, where you're with your family, So you gotta have fun, man.
For sure.
Man, I got to ask about this because obviously I'm tackinging on teams. Was crazy when y'all like heard of Kyle Rien that this ship was real with the Tim Donahue stuff, Like, how was that reaction.
Amongst y'all because we knew that before he came out.
Damn it was.
I mean, it's a funny situation because Chucky Brown. You know Chucky Brown's fourteen seasons. You know, I'm in my I'm in my fourth. Man, I'm talking cash ship in La. So like the Mulus, the best owners ever, like they put you at movie premieers, they put you at these, they put you at this and in order to be seen and stuff. So I was at movie premiers and the red carpet talking shit, sh it's over with. Ain't nothing they could do them, Ain't nothing. They can't stop us on the radio talking ship. So I mean, Chuck you Brown pulled me so they might. You know, if they're bringing a certain crew, it's gonna go a certain way. It was like, man, bullshit, Man, ain't no way. We're up twenty points, server game. Ain't nothing even if they do it and can stop. And so just watching that, man, just seeing it looking back now, that shit makes me sick, man, because I think we could. That could have been our championship for damn sure. And so going and playing New Jersey, they swept New Jersey. I think we beat the shit out of New Jersey that year too. I think we being a bout fifty I think one time going to New Jersey. But it was just just sad to see. I mean, we had that we kind of shipped the bad Game seven, but I really don't think it should have got to Game seven.
I shouldn't sure, like you said, you look back at especially the team I had was so crazy and then for that to come out, and then for them like to Africa comes out, y'all know, and it's publicized, but then for people like to romanticize about it, just like that's so crazy that, like, especially like y'all worked so hard for moments and play our ass off to beat them situations. We know how many things have to fall in the line perfectly to win the championship is like to play your ass off and to have thats just like.
What the still makes me sick man, Like this, even like Robert Horry shot, like I watched the highlights and still watch the ship and I'll cut it off before that before that going. I remember that ship like it was yesterday, watching that month for boom walking in the locker room, Damn, we gotta go one more.
That broke everybody heart.
Man.
I think the whole world was pulling for you off.
Every getting that they had our champagne already in the locker room. They have to put all that ship back, Damn.
I know all the time. Yeah, I think you just had a moment of silence.
There because I'm thinking about this, watching thinking about the champagne. I'm like, I remember we won, we had that champ.
That got you one. That's all. That's all that, man. You get to go home, take one home. Man, That's what That's what it's about.
Bro.
You could say. And I made people say they want NBA Championship for congratulations on that I finally got in one.
I was so fie something.
It's good man, y'all deserve it, man, I.
Appreciate it for sure. I got to ask, man, what is your favorite city that you played in favor? What favorite city?
I like playing home and I like being in Phoenix just because I get to see my family, I got to stay at home. I always love coming back home as fifty people at the game, one hundred people at the game, you know, I mean just going and just playing in front of your family and friends. I love coming back home.
When you leave Sacramento, you come to Atlanta, and what's that like? Because that first year y'all in Atlanta, well maybe your second year or whatever you y'all played the Celtics in.
The playoffs, was the first year I think, Yeah, y'all got it cracking. It was.
I mean it was different because, like I said, no one really I don't think me and Joe were only two people that ever been in the playoffs, and so for to come there and have the city on fire like that and take them to seven, I mean, we got our ass beat every time in Boston, but I mean we we had that shit on fire in It was just I think it had to do I'm not saying it was all me, but I think it had to do it with a lot of just bringing the guys together and just hanging out and just you know, trusting people and ship like that. So I mean just being a c like that and putting that on fire.
It was fun, man, because I came to next year and the buzz was still there. When I got drafted.
It was like, as I had the.
Fight video with kg S, it was just like, yeah, he had the rocky, rocky stuff going.
It was just like a buzz in the city and I was like, see.
You got to see it. You didn't get to see it when it was really bad, because it used to be really bad ten years before they made the playoffs.
Yeah, I only seen the good.
Steven Jackson, it was wicked. It was wicked Jersey.
Yeah, it was nasty.
I only seen the good. So but when I got there, Vivian and they was it was rolling. I came into a winning team.
So you're there with Flip.
Nah wasn't there, but you you probably don't remember. He had just left and so you know how smooth is.
He Like you took a C lost spot and you took Flip spot. And I'm like, I don't even know who they are.
I'm like, okay, A was young. I think it was like a C like second year.
I'm like, He's like, you took the spot.
They're gonna be at you because we played them in the preseason and Flip made me fall was cold.
Motherfucker man.
A lot of people find he hit me with a snatch back and I feel I looked at the bench. Joe Smith was like this, I looked at Ben looking.
That's why you can't pay defense like that, man, That's what.
The shot he made me so big, Josh stand up point that.
I'm like, that's a crazy I like the story that you told about here shooting threes to he he wasn't about it. And my boy used to boots Smooth. I was like, he turned around like, Smooth, it's the home fans. He would just shoot it just because the show them. Shut the fuck up. Yeah, you know what I mean.
Smooth was so you remember the bet you made with him? Man, you remember ship you got to break it up. You bet him like maybe like five or ten thousand dollars that he can shoot. He couldn't shoot more than ten threes that year and he would shoot all right in front of the three point. But he had it was like his best year. He almost should have made the All Star team. It was my first year and he would not shoot threes. He was just pump fake, take a step in. He was making them and he was like he would not shoot he like one. I was like, yeah, but it worked. I'm like, damn Bibby really playing like man. He figured like he figures Smooth.
Out like that.
He's the most athletic player I play with and that I've seen that motherfucker do whatever you want if you get in the open court so I try to just you try to get get him in open court to give him the ball to where he does he's not standing in the spotting up. He was a monster in the in the in the open court man.
He was one of the smartest players I played with. He Todd never forget. He told me you want to shoot.
The ball team. I was like yeah.
He's like, when you get in, just go stand right next to Joe.
And I was like why.
He's like, they gonna double team, They're gonna pass it to you. You're gonna be wild. He's at work every time, the bitch crying Joe.
Like cut through, smooth, smooth, like go ahead, smooth and smooth in the way. So he getting shot. You know what, We're there. You were there when we used to play that game after durn practice.
Yeah, a shooting game.
No shoot, We had this fucked up game that remember you got pissed this game right, So like it was like five hundred dollars. So if it touched three hands, your fifteen yea, the person that your thousands of Jeff and five hundred. So we'll be running play all your run you're running offense. Boom boom, someone shoots a jumper, they start will start sprinting that. So like if it missed, I tip the Jeff different, tip back to me and I'll make it. You owe me a thousand, you owe him five hundred. So we were shooting that like during we like running.
Plays practice just like I can't take it serious.
Like I mean every every shot, Muffle was shooting and just take off full speed and just person up where they can't tap it. So when the ball hits the ground, it's over with. So remember LD was like, man, do that ship after So we said, like after the press would be like five or six of us we get. We shoot five shots. You can't move until you make the three. So if you make if you make off five, you don't know money. But if you if you miss and you fuck them up and they don't make it or they make it, you gotta you gotta old than the money man.
They start doing that ship for anything though, like one fuck, just be shooting by itself, come out of nowhere.
I would even shoot a jumper in practice. He don't count, he don't count.
I was like, thank you please, crazy playing tipsy, serious as hell.
This is in the playoffs. All type of ship we have fun.
You gotta have fun.
Man.
We had fun out there was great.
Man. We gotta ask you know what I'm saying. So you was young Nachos man, how was he as a rookie?
Man? He was just I mean you could tell that he was like kind of under the under the bright lights to where he listened to anything he said because like everything they're telling him, like you couldn't tell you couldn't. I didn't take anything what he said serious, you know what I mean. But he like coming in he would have to he had to listen, you know what I mean. Like he's his mindset was like I gotta do what I gotta do to get some playing time. So he was going to try to stay in the right. That's why they got Jordan Crawford out there because they didn't want him, Jordan to corrupt. Yeah, they put Jordan the trade with me, me, the fucking the fucking Wizards trying to Yeah, because they don't want Jeff to be corrupted.
Man.
But I mean, but Jeff, Jeff was quiet. I mean, he played his role. He wanted to like he wanted to. I don't wanna say fit in. But as far as just like being a rookie man being a rookie eyes wide open. You're playing against superstars that you watch, been watching on TV for years, and I mean, like I could, I knew he was gonna be something special when the time came, you know what I mean. Just I mean it was good that I think to come from the comfort a team that was winning, you know, and have some good bets for him to getting ready for that because you get the shitty team. Motherfuckers ain't gonna help you. You go like a sucked up team. You're gonna be sitting, You're gonna be by yourself all night. You know what I mean. I would see you tomorrow and walking in right before practice starts and ain't gonna be it ain't gonna be. That's how it's gonna be.
Yeah, when he was in your prime, That's what I want to ask you, Like, who was one of your toughest matchups that you.
Knew you had to Ain't no over there gonna say, Marburry, Marburry. I mean you'd like, I was never the defensive player anyway I heard. So my main thing is like, shit, you're gonna I would always go and I'm gonna say the weakest player. But the guy that's really not gonna get the most shots, Doug Christie, you need me guarding them. Bobby Jackson with Bobby Jackson on. So, I mean the main thing, like my thing was with Marburry, because Marbury, he's gonna get thirty shots. He's strong, he's quick, he's fast, and he was just I mean, he's like he's the type of guy that, like when you go against the point guard. His mindset was like, Okay, these are the guys that they have trying to come up against him, gonna go outre and try to bust his ass. He had that mentality like for.
Real, Yeah that was a light twenty and eight guarantee of life.
So yeah, tough.
He don't get spoken enough.
He almost made me tear my knee. Shit. He was in Phoenix and he I kind of closed out to him half aass, closed out and I think, okay, just shoot it. So I kind of like and he kind of hit me with a So I was like I wanted to retreat, and I just like kind of sat down. I was like dam and I got up and I was I played the rest of the game, but by trying the end of the game, my legs started like it started cramping. I'm like, and that ship was like this big damn. I said, man, please check make sure and they I mean it wasn't torn, it was it was spring, but that ship like this, that's on the first time anybody shook me like that. I was trying to let him shoot, but then I was gonna at least try to, you know, kind of body him up if you I can't just give him straight line to the basket for almost killed me.
I know Memphis was, I mean, Vancouver so shitty, But do you have a memorable game career or anything from Vancouver that you remember, Like.
I remember playing my first game. The thing I remember. It was a preseason game. We played the Blazers, so I mean everybody on their team was six eight or tall except the start of my and I remember my first game and I turned around. They started there fucking full court pressing me and like Scottie Pippen, she Wallace fucking trapping me. So then fort like from the start, bro, I can remember that like it was yesterday. I was like, damn, if this ship gonna be like this, I don't know if I want I don't think I want to play no like six eight six night there. I mean, their team was big, so it was like coming to trap, I'm like, damn man. It was just like once I got out there, I was okay, but there's no really. I mean, I had a lot of assists when I was in in Vancouver, but that's the main thing I played with my dude, my mood out though, roof, and all I did was just standing out there and pass him. He's shot. So I got I got my highest I let the I was in the top ten and assists for three years out there, I think.
So you have some good memories, nigga. It wasn't always sorry. You got buckets and drafted.
I said, I get drafted was a good memory, you know. And I got a story on that too. I got it. So it was between me and Oliver Candy to get drafted number one. So I got super agent David Falk, and you know, he's like, yeah, they're gonna they're gonna wait till the day of the draft to figure out what they're gonna pick. So the drafts in Vancouver, and you know when you said at the table, you're there, so like he comes back here, like they're gonna take Olliver Candy one. Grizzly's gonna take you to like. But I mean, it's just been there's nothing about the city. I was just. I was nineteen, I just turned twenty. I got a family. I don't want to move to Canada, man, in a different country. So I go up to the I go up to the meeting rooms. I'm with the GM and the co coach and my agent there, and he was like, I remember looking out the window, man, it's I'm from Arizona. Y'all see how it is here. We get seventy seven days in a row over one hundred degrees, so we don't see no rain. So I'm looking out the window and it's raining, it's dark and it's noon. I'm like, man just telling me. I said, look, I don't want to play here. That says nothing against you guys, nonhe against the city, the fans, the team. I just I told him the same thing. I'm young, I want to be We're gonna pick you anyway, I said, damn shift team. Minutes later, I was walking around the thing in the Vancouver. Man, it was three years of ship.
You made it through those day up there, bro. You went to the joint for a little bit, right, all right? You know what I mean? What camp? You though, like wanting to work on your game though, because it seemed like that you was depressed out there. Now, I wouldn't say depressed, but down.
I mean, I just I mean because when we weren't like getting our ass kicked like that. I've always worked, you know, ever since I got to When I got to U of A, I would work my ass off and was like when I got to the league, I even worked harder. So my main thing was just like just being on top of your game, and you know, things were trying for good. And the first pick was the Clippers. You know back then it was a that was a fucked up situation, like the organization. I think everything happens for a reason, man. So I mean, like I said, Michael Heise, trade me the sacrament of Kings without him, who knows what happened?
Legend was built for sure?
For sure, I gotta ask you, I know, obviously still tuning the game on your coaching and staying on tune with it.
What is you know some of the young players are mind you yourself?
I like you know that some people that game I don't know if they remind me on a subbingd I like, I like Dame, I like something I like step I love step like Steph's mindset in just the way that he plays in the shots and the best shooter to ever played a game. I remember all this ship once I leave here. But I mean, I mean, just I watched basketball. I like to see just guy, it's a different game now, Like it's a lot of dripple handoffs and stuff like that, but a lot of three point shooting. But my main guy, Like, if I had to pick one guy that like, I'm gonna go.
At the end, I'm not to say Dame, Yeah yeah, dang bro.
And we talked to Dame earlier and it's like he don't get enough just do he does? He does, don't get enough just and he does it. He does it at the right time of games, you know, like a lot of game winners and stuff like that.
But he stopped up.
That's one thing that you like you did too. You hit big tim shots, like in the clutch. You always showed up. Even when you was in Atlanta. I remember we used to run that out of bounds player. I run it for my high school team. Used to I was running the big three. What do he has some good players, but I just remember you to make big shots off there. You set the backscreen, get the ball, come off, one dribble, pull up.
Same. My thing is strong, Mine is a strong thing man. So I always like I've always had a strong mind. I could be playing golf and it'd be down forty strokes on the whole eighteen. I still think I've got a chance to win.
He don't.
Come back of the site.
I feel I put enough work in, Like I've worked hard enough on my shots. Every shot I took I thought was going there. And so I mean it's just just putting in the time.
That my fucker pick and roll with you. And see Web used to be so healy too.
What killed him was Webb's jumper like Web, Like I said, I don't even think Web gets enough credit that he should be getting. In fact, I mean he's probably the best big man passer probably ever played the game. Top three for sure, and I mean he had the soft hands. He catch any thing you throw, the knock down, the jump shot, and the main thing with him was that he held himself accountable. That's what made him the top top player that I played with, Yeah, because he used to set you up for all kind of open He was still end up with twenty eight. It was in the past, but he still want to score twenty eight points for sure.
You play with some cold players, like you just said, see you Webb underrated, should be one of the top power forwards all time. But like you played with Mellow, you play with Joe Johnson. I always go back and forth and say who was the better isolation player ship, and I always picked Joe. I think Joe was the best isolation player I ever seen.
I mean, it's tough. They both I think they are both two different types. Joe kind of used his strength more, yeah, and uh and Melow was more use his height to where like he'll shoot over you or step back or something like that. Wonderable pullups. But I mean, Ship, that's hard. That's a hard decision to make.
Eight.
He put you in the ring, right, Yeah, he played with them up close. That's a good question, bro, That's.
Tough though, A good question I don't answer.
On I'm taking Mellow just because to me, well, y'all niggas was in the league. What I'm saying, I just feel like Mellow had that inside game too, but Joe did had that postworker like Melo though.
Joe Scott.
One to hand jumper, mellowing that body and you, God damn you, I've seen even personal that he's built like Lebron James.
That's a bit you can't lose either way. I think neither one of them get the justice that they deserve.
They both cold speaking Lebron use the part of that I'm saying show that he does seem how was that it was different?
Man?
What something I wasn't used to it, you know what I mean? Like as far as I wasn't playing that much anywhere, I was playing about twelve minutes a game, and just it was different. Man, There's nothing like I ever been in before, as far as like body fat testsing every week if you like, if you don't make the body fat tests, you gotta you gotta do extra cardo, you gotta weigh yourself every week. No, I had to pay for one of my jerseys to take my jersey home. I had to pay for a jersey there. I think they keep all of them. I don't know what they keep them for, but it was hard to get some stuff out of there, and it was just different. I mean it was it was something different, that pat own ship that he does and but something I wasn't used to. It wasn't my best years or best time there, but like I said, I was playing a little bit of the game in my mind. Stting that started, My mind started to go like maybe it's time for me to be done, you know, you know all that.
Yeah, especially with all the media circus that came with being on that team, Like you said, you transition in your career. Can imagine that's a lot to deal with because that's like even now a lot of people don't want to deal with the Lakers because they don't want to deal with come the playing with Lebron. I can imagine that exception that y'all was getting hate. Everybody hated you all at that time.
It was it was it was it was crazy man, because like every like the hot hotels, I mean thousands people outside the hotels just waiting to get autographs and just everywhere you go.
And it was different. It was differently he was in the rock start it comes up the heat on us. Yeah, that was crazy. Testing for body is crazy ship. I couldn't I couldn't played for the heat.
Well, you know what's crazy, like testing body talking about wait and stuff. Bro, you used to do perfect push ups in the middle of practice.
You told you told Lou I didn't work out man, push ups, Bro. Way you've seen our weight Bro, it was it was upstairs.
Have you been to London.
I've been to Like it's nice.
What they got a whole new facility off in and nowhere. It's a it's in Brookhaven. Man, it's unbelievable, really unbelievable. But the weight room you're talking about, it was terrible.
Do push ups, bro.
He would be in the middle, he had these perfect push ups. He'll look to the sidelight, but get in there. He could do a perfect push up. I'm like, this could not be the NBA.
Bro.
My way out.
I'm trying to get you ready.
I'm like doing perfect push ups.
Practice would once you started hitting the weight room heavy though, because you were not always lifted.
But they, like when I was in Sacramento, they kind of frowned upon lifting. So when I was a Sacramento I came back one year and they're like, Mike, I can't keep lifting like that. You look like a linebackers. I'm like, see what you want to do is sit at home and do nothing.
I got I'm I left Cardio, Mike.
No, hell, I got hurt.
I got hurt twice.
I'll never do Cardio again. I got hurt twice. And they me on the bike and on the armed cycle and on the thing for like twelve weeks straight. Bro, I'll say you never again. I'm not going that ship ever again.
Because Bro used to talk about you, like used to be on that ship. Hell know he came here for the Big three ship. Boy, he should see by day. Bro, he was strong. You were strong as hell and lone. I used to be like because when I first met you, I'm thinking of Mike.
Baby. You know I've seen man Sacramento. I walked up to him like, damn twenty I was.
I was too five.
You had an IG filter on Twitter on the TV.
What yeah, I know what they put on there. Bro.
I was ninety five, Bro, like two hundred and five.
I was. I was two five when I got to New York.
Bro, all it might just be chesting.
Your chest was out to here, like I'm like this, dude, I'm like, baby, man, you could guard all big dudes. He would tell Joe take the point guard. He'd be guard somebody six. They trying to post.
I'm like about the post hill they got outside weren't working.
He was so strong, Bro, I was like, man, he is too strong.
Yeah, I don't remember you like that and sex and when you start hitting hiding the way, said Mike, look.
Like they like I come in to practice, do one bench, one pull down, one leg, running back and you're done.
That wasn't enough.
Don't know though, but you look.
I ain't gonna lie, bro, and I ain't staring at you like that. But you don't look as crazy as what this nigga made you said, because I was played because I wasn't he was. I was looking for that thing on your neck.
I seen him.
I'm used to be like hooping years ago for a long time. So when I said, God was like a wrestler. But now you, like you said, you don't look crazy, like you work out a lot.
Because I don't remember you liked that. On two K two, Bro, I.
Think that they keep putting me into two K shoes and I wanted to fucking first joring to get two ks. Man, I get pissed coming in two k's.
Man, you get there right, get that right, many got the Trumphy rooms. Right. You know what I'm saying, You know, the face put me or something. Man shout out to Marcus. Yeah, for sure. We gotta ask, man, what's your favorite Jordans of all time?
I probably have to go with the elevens.
Man.
I like the I think they're called captain gowns all black ones.
Damn, you're probably the only person in the world that like them. What you mean nobody surprised by the black ones?
Right? Yeah? Yeah, what you mean you don't like those?
They decent, but not a lot of people whiting the black though.
Right now.
I like the concourse, they're not my face.
I don't.
I don't like elevens.
I like eleven man, it's my favorite.
He's a Columbia eleven. That white.
Was the elevens.
You had the cherry cherry elevens when we were in Atlanta, so white with the red.
You had the red pat leather. They can't end up coming out years later. They gave them you back then, you know what I.
Told him, because somebody was like they had that. I seen him a I'm like, those gotta be fake. I never seen them. And the guys like ship. We had them for you, we just never gave them to you.
They had them on nice kicks, That's what I'm saying.
But the Nike you guys like, we had them, we just never gave them to him.
Like because uh, you had them in Atlanta, because I remember when you h Zach when I was I was writing the joint.
It was probably a different one, but they gave me. They gave me a different one.
You had a white and red eleven.
I was like it was called something else. I know exactly what one too. And I was like Joe had by the weren't eleven? I was like, can I get them?
He was like, you have to ask, bib. I was like, I'm wild, I ain't gonna ask for them.
So you could have took anything. Nah.
I know when you gave me all the white ones, bro, I said, I looked at you. I was like you sure. He was like, yeah, man, go ahead, Merry Christmas. I'm like this ship the home.
And you know, he was what twelve and a half and I was at twelve, So I'm like, shit, it's cool, fucking little.
Big ain't tripping happened to them? Elevens? My little brother man, he won him to the club and got hennessy all over. I still got him.
Damn you let him take him?
Nah, I didn't know.
So he went to my closet at my house and he rocked him. He ain't know I was going out that night put him on. I seen him in the club. He kept hiding from you.
I'm like, I'm here, Bro, like, come up here. He's like, no, I'm stay down here. What the hell you doing? So I go up to him. I look down. I was like, man, what the fuck?
He brung them back upstairs. He was like, I don't know what happened, and it's n see brown everything. I was like, man, man, these ain't coming out. Bro, these don't come out.
He like, I don't know.
He just.
They still still got them.
What you got brothers from that boy?
Lots to me, bro, mens a lot to me, Like it's crazy. You remember what we talked about. You bomb me That watch? Bid was the best. He bought me a watch. I was in Beverly Hills. We was in Beverly Hills, whatever, and I was looking at this watch at the hotel and I'm like looking at it and I'm amazed, Like, look at the diamonds dropping in. He like, when you like that watch? I'm like yeah, Like thirty minutes go by. He called me like where you at rook. I'm like, man, I'm here here about to leave. He's like, now, come to my room real quick.
Come to his room. He opened a box like here you go. It was me and jord Crawford gave me one Jordan one. I'm like, what the fuck?
Yeah, I forgot that.
Yeah, yeah.
I threw my watch on so quick and my brother still got that watch. You still got that. I'm like, damn, that ship was crazy. I'm like, he got a lot of money.
