WCPT 820 Interview: Nathan Shrader

Published May 16, 2025, 3:32 PM

Richard is joined by Nathan Shrader, associate professor of politics and co-director of the Center for Civic Engagement at New England College.

Shrader discussed his background in Pennsylvania politics and his current role in New Hampshire, highlighting the state's high levels of civic engagement. He emphasized the importance of local politics and direct democracy, using town meetings as an example. Shrader also addressed the Democratic Party's current challenges, advocating for a "rebranding phase" focused on core values like paid family leave and health care expansion.

He also stressed the importance of comparison politics. "Back when I was doing more advising for candidates running for local offices or legislative offices, prior to my current career, I always found one of the most effective types of campaign material were the very clear-cut comparison pieces," Shrader told WCPT. "Just show them side by side and let the people make up their mind that way."
