Richard is joined by Illinois state Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, who discussed his role as the first Palestinian American legislator in Illinois and highlighted the recent passage of Karina's Bill, which bars domestic abusers from owning firearms and provides a mechanism for police to confiscate them.
"We have a serious issue in our country and in our state, where domestic abusers have, unfortunately, time and time again, gone to kill their ex-partner, and even if there was an order of protection against them, there was no real mechanism to confiscate their firearms," Rashid told WCPT. "And so what we did is we're protecting victims of domestic abuse. We're protecting so many women and children by finally passing a law that will bar domestic abusers from owning firearms, and that provides a mechanism for police to confiscate those firearms."
Rashid also stressed the need for federal gun control legislation to address the broader issue of gun violence and the flow of guns across state lines.
