Richard Chew is joined by Christale Spain, chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party. The discussion focused on strengthening South Carolina Democrats’ ground game, candidate recruitment, and voter engagement ahead of the November election.

Here are a few key points from the conversation:
- Spain said South Carolina recruited Democratic candidates for every state House race for the first time ever.
- Democrats are emphasizing candidate-to-voter conversations and local issues rather than relying on a single national message.
- Face-to-face outreach has persuaded some long-term Republican voters to support Democratic candidates, she said.
- Spain identified health care, education, affordability, senior care, and environmental concerns as key issues.
- She argued that Republican control has not addressed these issues, citing the legislature’s decision not to suspend the gas tax.
- South Carolina’s early presidential primary position was described as a way to elevate Black, Southern, and rural voters’ priorities.
