Scholarships Available for Georgia Agriculture Students

The Georgia Foundation for Agriculture is offering $65,000 in scholarships for Georgia students pursuing degrees in agriculture, veterinary medicine, family and consumer sciences, or related fields. The scholarships are divided into four categories, including opportunities for high school students, technical college enrollees, and rising college juniors/seniors. Additionally, there's a specific scholarship for UGA Veterinary Medicine students specializing in large animal/food animal practice. Each category has different award amounts, and eligible applicants are encouraged to apply online by March 1, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be announced in spring 2024, with awards distributed to graduating high school seniors for spring 2025 based on academic performance.

STORY 1:Holly Springs Weighing Property Tax Increase 

The Holly Springs City Council is considering increasing the millage rate to 4 mills, which would raise property taxes by 4.85% over the rollback rate. The rollback rate is 3.815 mills, and last year’s rate was 3.841 mills. If adopted, the new rate would result in a $36.08 tax increase for a property with a market value of $487,500. The council must hold three public hearings before finalizing the rate. These will take place at the Holly Springs Public Safety Building-Council Chambers on August 5 at 6:30 p.m., and August 19 at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

STORY 2:Canton Officials Considering $83.4M Budget

Canton leaders are considering an $83.4 million budget for fiscal year 2025, slightly over $1 million more than this year's budget. The budget includes a $27.8 million general fund, up $2.2 million, and a $41 million water and sewer fund, down $2.3 million. The Canton Police Department is allocated over $8 million. The proposed budget also anticipates $6 million in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax VIII revenue, up $4.4 million, but shows a $5.3 million decrease in SPLOST VII revenue. A public hearing will be held on August 1, with a vote scheduled for August 15. Meetings and details are available on the city’s website.

STORY 3:Greater Church gives out 1,000 backpacks, supplies  

On July 27, 2024, Greater Church hosted its Back to School Block Party, partnering with Joyce Meyer Hand of Hope. Over 1,800 attendees received 1,000 free bookbags and school supplies, 600 bags of groceries, and enjoyed tacos and hot dogs. The event featured free haircuts, and consultations for medical, dental, mental health, and immigration services. Activities included music, games, bounce houses, and a petting zoo, making it a festive occasion for local families.

STORY 4:Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy Hosts Open house

On July 29, 2024, Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy held an open house for students and their families to meet teachers and preview new classrooms. With the school year starting on August 1, Principal Ashley Polito is excited for the upcoming year, noting that this will be her third year leading the school. She praised the staff’s pre-planning efforts and emphasized that the school’s plans incorporate feedback from parents to benefit the approximately 750 students expected to attend.

STORY 5:New Charges Filed in Cherokee County Child Sex Abuse Case

Dustin Gottschall, a 36-year-old from Woodstock, was originally indicted in November 2022 on charges of aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. After being released on bond in January 2023, new evidence led to additional charges. On July 22, 2024, Gottschall was re-arrested and now faces five counts each of manufacturing and possessing child pornography. He remains in Cherokee County jail without bond.

STORY 1:Reinhardt’s Price School of Education Expands Program Offerings   

This fall, Reinhardt University’s Price School of Education is launching two new programs: a Post-Baccalaureate Teaching Certification in Pedagogy-Only and a Master’s in the Art of Teaching (MAT) Pedagogy degree. The Post-Baccalaureate program is for those with non-education degrees, allowing them to earn a teaching certification online while working. The MAT Pedagogy degree is aimed at certified teachers with unrelated degrees, providing additional credentials and potential salary increases. Both programs are online and address regional and statewide needs for qualified educators. Tami Smith, director of teacher education, highlights the importance of these programs in helping individuals pursue teaching careers and enhance their professional development.

STORY 2:Sequoyah’s Tousignaut Headed to KSU   

Sequoyah basketball star Brendan Tousignaut committed to Kennesaw State on July 22, following in the footsteps of former Etowah guard Chase Clemmons, who joined the Owls last year. Tousignaut, a 6-foot-6 rising senior, averaged 19 points, nine rebounds, and two steals per game, leading Sequoyah to the Class 6-A playoffs and earning a spot on the All-Cherokee County first team. His commitment comes as Kennesaw State’s basketball program, which recently made the NCAA Tournament, aims to build on its success. Tousignaut's addition is expected to bolster the Owls’ roster as they strive to improve from a recent 15-16 season.

STORY 3:Cherokee Sheriff’s Office: Fire Truck Hit in Multi-Vehicle Crash

On Thursday morning, a Cherokee County fire truck responding to a crash on Interstate 575 in Canton was struck by two cars, resulting in minor injuries to two individuals. The incident occurred around 8:07 a.m., and all northbound lanes were closed for about an hour starting at 8:15 a.m. due to the accident. Rainy weather is suspected to have contributed to the multi-car crash. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.

STORY 4:Highland Rivers Behavioral Health Partners with Georgia Military College 

Highland Rivers Behavioral Health is partnering with Georgia Military College to offer tuition reimbursement for its employees through the GMC Partner’s Network. This initiative aims to support employees pursuing degrees related to behavioral health, such as psychology, social work, and business management. The program includes options for in-seat or online courses at GMC’s campuses and Global Online Leadership College. Highland Rivers, a major public behavioral health provider in northwest Georgia, hopes this partnership will enhance career advancement and educational opportunities for its over 900 staff members. The Highland Rivers Foundation also offers scholarships to further support employees and individuals in recovery.

STORY 5:Circle of Friends Opening Café in Hickory Flat. What We Know  

Flourish Café, a new initiative by Circle of Friends, has begun its soft opening in Hickory Flat, with a grand opening scheduled for August 16-17. This is Circle of Friends’ second coffee shop designed to employ adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The café, located at 2864 E. Cherokee Drive, Suite F near Canton, will offer coffee, treats, and host community events. The grand opening includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 16 at 10 a.m. Circle of Friends, a nonprofit established in 2019, also operates a coffee shop at Chattahoochee Technical College’s Woodstock campus.

STORY 6:Local Attorney Tapped for Cherokee County Juvenile Court Judge Post  

Amanda G. Speights has been appointed to serve as a judge for the Juvenile Court of Cherokee County, beginning January 1, 2025. The appointment, made by the Cherokee County Superior Court judges, fills the vacancy left by Judge Jennifer Davis’s promotion to Superior Court. Speights, a Cherokee County native and partner at Speights Law, has extensive experience in family and juvenile law, and has served as a defense attorney for the Juvenile Drug Treatment Court. She is also an active community volunteer and board member. Speights, a Kennesaw State University and John Marshall Law School graduate, expressed her dedication to upholding justice and fairness for children and families in her new role.

STORY 7:$13M in State Funding Going to Cherokee Transportation Projects  

Cherokee County has secured over $13 million in state funding for transportation upgrades, including the Ball Ground Bypass, Highway 140 widening, and improvements to the Cherokee County Regional Airport. This funding is part of a $1.5 billion state investment announced by the Georgia Department of Transportation, funded by surplus approved by Governor Brian Kemp and state lawmakers. The allocation includes $7.5 million for Highway 140 improvements, $4.4 million for the Ball Ground Bypass, and $1.2 million for the airport. This investment is aimed at enhancing local infrastructure to support regional growth and development.

Tousignaut's addition is expected to bolster the Owls’ roster as they strive to improve from a recent 15-16 season.

The incident occurred around 8:07 a.m., and all northbound lanes were closed for about an hour starting at 8:15 a.m. due to the accident. Rainy weather is suspected to have contributed to the multi-car crash. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.

Amanda G. Speights has been appointed to serve as a judge for the Juvenile Court of Cherokee County, beginning January 1, 2025. The appointment, made by the Cherokee County Superior Court judges, fills the vacancy left by Judge Jennifer Davis’s promotion to Superior Court. Speights, a Cherokee County native and partner at Speights Law, has extensive experience in family and juvenile law, and has served as a defense attorney for the Juvenile Drug Treatment Court. She is also an active community volunteer and board member. Speights, a Kennesaw State University and John Marshall Law School graduate, expressed her dedication to upholding justice and fairness for children and families in her new role.

STORY 1:Charlie Ferguson Community Center Hosts Free Health and Job Fair 

The Charlie Ferguson Community Center organized its annual Community Health and Job Fair on July 13, serving nearly 300 attendees with a wide range of health services and resources. Health screenings such as vision, A1C, blood glucose, and blood pressure tests were provided, alongside vaccines, breast exams, prostate markers, and tests for conditions like hepatitis C and HIV. Partners like Wellstar Health System, Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, and various community organizations offered these services. The fair also featured resources from Medicare Fraud Patrol, Social Security Administration, Veterans Services, and others, aimed at supporting community members with legal, senior, and employment services. Lunch was co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A Canton and Medicare Fraud Patrol.

STORY 2:Pedestrian Stuck on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton 

A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton, prompting a response from the Canton Police Department at 1:51 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. Eastbound lanes of Reinhardt College Parkway from Waleska Road to Reservoir Drive were temporarily closed for the investigation and reopened by 4:30 p.m.

STORY 3:Highway 140 Project Gets $7.5M in State Funding 

State funding totaling $7.5 million has been allocated for widening Highway 140 in Cherokee and Fulton counties, with preliminary engineering set to commence in 2025. This funding is part of a broader $1.5 billion transportation infrastructure package announced by Gov. Brian Kemp, utilizing surplus funds earmarked earlier by state lawmakers for transportation improvements. State Rep. Brad Thomas, advocating for county infrastructure enhancements, emphasized the project's significance for quality of life and traffic safety. Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby credited Thomas for securing the funding, highlighting the project's role in addressing rapid growth and improving community infrastructure. The Cherokee County school board has approved academic calendars spanning from the 2025-26 to the 2027-28 school years. These calendars maintain the district's "balanced calendar" approach, featuring weeklong breaks in September, February, November, and April, along with a two-week break starting in December. Developed by a committee of educators and parents, the calendars ensure that students begin no earlier than August 1 and conclude before Memorial Day each year. This planning allows families and employees to prepare in advance. The Cherokee County School District has achieved a record number of national awards for its excellence in communications and public relations. Awards include excellence in categories such as Magazine for their 2023-24 Class Act, Newsletter for CCSD Connections, and Writing for profiles of 2024 Teacher of the Year finalists. They also received Merit awards for their Handbook/Guide, Photography, and Honorable Mention for Financial Publication and Newsletter. The CCSD Office of Communications, led by Chief Communications Officer Barbara Jacoby, continues to uphold high standards in educational communications.
