STORY 1:   Cherokee County School Board Takes Steps to Pursue Forensic Audit 

The Cherokee County school board approved a forensic audit of the district’s finances on March 20, following concerns from citizens about budget transparency after opting out of the House Bill 581 homestead exemption. Board Member Chance Beam proposed the audit to restore public trust and address potential inefficiencies. The motion passed 5-2, though dissenting members Kelly Poole and Susan Padgett-Harrison raised concerns about unknown costs. The board will meet on March 27 to clarify the audit’s scope and discuss costs, with suggestions to phase the audit to manage expenses. The meeting will be live-streamed for public access. 

STORY 2: Woodstock High School Graduate Competing on 'American Idol' 

Ethan Senger, a Woodstock High School graduate, will appear on the March 30 episode of *American Idol*, performing his original song "Something to Write About" during the final audition stage. Senger, who grew up in a musical family, began playing guitar at age 7 and singing at 8. Encouraged by his girlfriend, he auditioned via Zoom and advanced to perform for judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie. Senger described the experience as a valuable test of his poise and confidence. Now a full-time musician, he blends rock, pop, and indie in his music and has an upcoming performance on April 5 in Atlanta. 

STORY 3: Free Home Elementary Open House Set for April 

The Cherokee County School District will host an open house for the new Free Home Elementary School on April 29 from 5-6:30 p.m. at 8828 Ball Ground Road near Cumming. The new building, opening for classes in August, will replace the current 1950s structure impacted by a highway widening project. While currently serving 274 students, the new facility is designed to accommodate up to 850, supporting future growth. Free Home Elementary has a history spanning nearly 120 years, making this a significant milestone for the community.

STORY 4:   Cherokee High School Celebrates Food Pantry Expansion 

Cherokee High School has expanded its food pantry through a partnership with Kroger and MUST Ministries, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting on March 26. Originally established in 2020 by the Student Athlete Leadership Team, the pantry provides nonperishable food, toiletries, and paper products to students, staff, and families in need. The expansion is part of Kroger’s $207,000 donation to support school pantries across metro Atlanta. Serving 50-100 families monthly, the pantry also offers discreet backpack programs and monthly distributions. Principal Andy Hall and MUST Ministries leaders praised the partnership for addressing food insecurity and supporting the community. 

 

STORY 5: Lawmakers decide to ban cellphones in public elementary and middle schools 

Georgia's General Assembly passed House Bill 340, banning personal cellphone use in elementary and middle schools starting next fall, with Gov. Brian Kemp expected to decide on the measure soon. The "Distraction-Free Education Act" aims to reduce classroom distractions and improve student well-being, requiring devices to be locked away during school hours, with exceptions for medical needs. Inspired by global efforts to limit technology's impact on children, the bill follows similar bans in other states and countries. While some Democrats raised concerns about broader school safety issues, the bill received bipartisan support, with discussions of extending the ban to high schools in the future.

STORY 1:  Cellphone Ban in Georgia Public Schools Closer to Becoming law 

Georgia's House Bill 340, which bans cellphones in public elementary and middle schools, advanced through a Senate committee and awaits a full Senate vote. Proponents argue that smartphones harm student behavior, mental health, and academic performance, while critics question emergency communication and the exclusion of high schools. The bill mandates schools to establish post-emergency communication policies. Rep. Scott Hilton suggested high school bans could follow in the future. Advocates, including ExcelinEd, highlight improved mental health and academics in states with similar bans. The bill passed the committee 4-1 and moves to the Senate Rules Committee. 

STORY 2: Cherokee County Students Place at State Tech Competition 

Six Cherokee County School District students earned statewide recognition at the Georgia Student Technology Competition. The contest, open to grades 3-12, showcases projects in categories like mobile apps, robotics, and video production. Thirty-eight CCSD students advanced to state after winning regionals. State winners include Micah Currie (Productivity Design), Jackson Davis and Bella Higgins (Animation), and James Moody (Digital Photo Production), all earning second place. Zephyr Johnson (Device Modification) and Jack Mizelle (Project Programming) secured third place. 

STORY 3: Trader Joe's Could be Coming to Adair Park in Woodstock 

Adair Park developer Eric Richards is seeking to expand the Woodstock development with a mixed-use project that could include a Trader Joe's. Richards has applied for permits to build single-family homes, townhomes, and a multi-family building with retail space, including a grocery store. Plans also propose extending Short Street and creating a pedestrian-friendly road connecting Main Street and Rope Mill Road. The project, which may require $9 million in city funding for infrastructure, is under review by Woodstock's Planning Commission and City Council in April. Richards aims to complete the development by 2030.

STORY 4:   Site Work Set to Begin on Property for New CATS Building 

Cherokee County is set to begin site work for a new Cherokee Area Transit Service (CATS) Administration Building at Univeter and Pinecrest Roads near Canton. The Board of Commissioners approved an $849,000 construction services agreement with Place Services, Inc., plus an $85,000 contingency. This phase includes clearing, earthwork, and stormwater system installation, with clearing expected to start by month's end. The building is still in design, with construction contracts anticipated by summer and completion expected within a year. Funded 80% by a federal grant and 20% by local sales tax, the facility will address current space shortages and support CATS' growth for 20+ years. 

 

STORY 5: Tort Reform Passes Another Hurdle in Georgia General Assembly 

Gov. Brian Kemp's priority tort reform bill, Senate Bill 68, advanced through a Georgia House committee after extensive hearings. The bill aims to curb high jury awards impacting businesses by introducing measures like premises liability guidelines, seat belt evidence in auto cases, and limiting medical damage claims to actual costs. Concerns about its impact on sex trafficking victims led to amendments allowing exceptions for these cases, avoiding retraumatization in court. While some lawmakers pushed for broader protections for other sexual crime victims, the focus remained on trafficking. The bill, already passed by the Senate, may reach the House floor soon.

Authorities emphasize that toll agencies do not request payments via text and urge residents not to click on any links in these messages.

The Buckle, Inc. is relocating its store from Town Center at Cobb to The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta in Woodstock, opening April 1. Known for its wide selection of denim and over 200 fashion brands, including BKE, Levi’s, and Free People, Buckle also offers services like free hemming, personal styling, and rewards programs. The retailer operates 440 stores across 42 states, with career opportunities available at buckle.jobs.

STORY 4:   Bill Would Make Driver’s License on a Smartphone Official for Georgia Police 

Georgia's House Bill 296, which would require police to accept digital driver’s licenses during traffic stops, is advancing through the Senate after passing the House with bipartisan support. The bill aims to modernize identification, allowing drivers to use licenses stored in Apple or Google Wallets, already used by 450,000 Georgians. It excludes use at polling places and bars, addressing election security concerns. Law enforcement agencies must equip officers with devices to validate digital licenses by 2027. Traditional licenses remain valid, and drivers are advised to carry both forms of ID. 

 

STORY 5: Woodstock Looks to Establish Paid Parking Areas Downtown 

Woodstock leaders are moving forward with plans to introduce paid parking zones in downtown, primarily affecting street parking. On March 10, the City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to establish paid parking, with a final vote set for March 24. Mayor Michael Caldwell emphasized that the city’s parking deck, with 633 spaces, will remain free. The plan aims to improve parking turnover and support local businesses. Proposed zones include 287 spaces out of 1,509 total downtown spaces, with fees capped at $2/hour and a three-hour limit. If approved, implementation is expected by April 15, with public input opportunities beforehand.
