STORY 1:   Coat Drive Collecting Donations for Homeless Veterans

The Georgia Pest Control Association, alongside other partners, is working with the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program to collect coats for homeless and low-income veterans and others in need. The drive, running through Dec. 4, aims to provide warmth during winter and has collected over 17,000 coats since its inception. Donations of gently used coats in all sizes can be made at the Arrow Exterminators National Training Center in Woodstock, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After the drive ends, the coats will be sorted by size and gender and distributed to local organizations on Dec. 5, ensuring quick delivery to those in need. This year’s goal includes fulfilling 9,000 coat requests and supporting Hurricane Helene victims in Western North Carolina. Community members are encouraged to donate to honor and assist veterans while making a meaningful impact.

STORY 2:  Cherokee County School District Appoints Three New Leaders

Three new leaders will join the Cherokee County School District on Jan. 6. Amy Graham, with 25 years in education, will become the new chief human resources officer, succeeding a retiring leader. Graham, currently CCSD’s executive director for elementary certified staffing, began as a classroom teacher before advancing to principal and her current district role. Kelli Kimbrell, a 24-year educator from Cobb County Schools, will take on the newly created position of executive director for Special Education, bringing extensive experience as a teacher, facilitator, and compliance assistant director. Jessica Sevin, an 18-year educator from Fulton County Schools, will step into the new role of supervisor for advanced learning, building on her background as a teacher, resource specialist, and coordinator for advanced studies. These new roles are part of a district reorganization.

STORY 3:  Highland Rivers Hosting Veteran Suicide Prevention Forum

Highland Rivers Behavioral Health will host a free community forum, “Veterans Circle of Care,” on veteran suicide prevention from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Cherokee County Fire Station 21 near Ball Ground. The event, part of Highland Rivers’ outreach initiative supported by the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, aims to raise awareness about behavioral health services for veterans. Open to veterans, their families, local providers, and community members from Cherokee and Pickens counties, the forum will feature speakers addressing suicide prevention and available resources. Attendees are asked to RSVP via email to veterans@highlandrivers.org as space is limited. Lunch will be provided.

STORY 4:   Cherokee Probation Services: Operations Are Smoother at New Facility

Cherokee Probation Services has relocated to a new facility at the Albert L. Stone Building in downtown Canton, designed to improve efficiency and accommodate future growth. Previously sharing space with multiple departments, the move freed up space at the Cherokee Marshal’s Office and provided probation services with a more suitable layout. KRH Architects, hired in March 2023, worked with Director Emili Roman to design a single-floor facility featuring 25 offices, dedicated restrooms for staff, expanded drug testing areas, a waiting area, training room, and breakroom. Renovations also included updates to the building’s exterior and historical monument. The new location enhances accessibility for probationers and streamlines operations, offering room for the department to grow.

STORY 5: New Floral Boutique Takes Root in Woodstock Community

Gather & Bloom, a new floral boutique on Main Street in downtown Woodstock, celebrated its grand opening on Nov. 22 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Michael Caldwell. Designed in a Parisian style with a custom “Bloom Bar” of fresh flowers, the shop offers personalized arrangements, subscription services, and event designs, all crafted from locally sourced flowers. Owner Lauren Youmans, inspired by her grandmother and a love for floral design, transitioned from running her business at home to opening this boutique. She aims to support local farmers while creating unique, artful arrangements. Future plans include hosting creative workshops and expanding into an outdoor “secret garden” event space. Business hours are Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
