STORY 1:Marker Recognizes Canton’s Historic Stumptown Neighborhood  

A new historic marker commemorating Canton’s Stumptown neighborhood will be unveiled at Burge Park on Crisler Street, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for July 22 at 10 a.m. The initiative, a collaboration between History Cherokee and the city of Canton, was funded by the city and developed by History Cherokee’s Black History Committee. Stumptown, established in the 1920s, is one of Cherokee County’s oldest predominantly Black communities, named for the tree stumps left under house foundations during its development. The marker aims to highlight the community’s historical significance, with plans for more markers in partnership with the city to recognize other historic neighborhoods. STORY 2:Cherokee Approves Property Tax Increase 

Cherokee County commissioners unanimously approved a property tax increase, setting the maintenance and operations millage rate at 5.153 mills, lower than the originally advertised 5.224 mills. This decision will raise property tax revenues by 5.99% over the rollback rate. The county also set the parks bond millage rate at 0.27 and the fire district tax rate at 2.888 mills, resulting in a total rate of 8.311 mills. The increase is intended to fund additional firefighter positions and meet rising costs due to inflation. Residents expressed mixed reactions at public hearings, with some supporting the tax hike for improved services like Bob Alford.

STORY 3:Construction Contract Awarded for Long Swamp Creek Rec AreaCherokee County commissioners have approved a $2 million construction contract with Magnum Contracting, LLC, for developing the Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area near Ball Ground. The project, located at the confluence of Long Swamp Creek and the Etowah River on 24 acres purchased in 2019, aims to enhance recreational amenities. Planned features include a canoe and kayak launch, outdoor archery range, walking trails, campsites, picnic pavilion, restroom facilities, and parking. The project aligns with the Northeast Cherokee County Parks Plan and received funding from sources including a Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program grant and local contributions. Construction is set to commence soon with an expected opening in early 2025.

Recent water system issues in Waleska have been resolved, according to City Clerk and Manager Robyn Smith. The city experienced two interruptions this month due to low water levels in its tanks. The first incident occurred on July 4 due to a computer crash, affecting the Sam Nelson Road and Reinhardt College Parkway areas. A temporary fix was implemented until the computer was rebuilt. A subsequent water main break on July 15, caused by a lightning strike on Fincher Road, led to disruptions in that area. Both incidents triggered boil water advisories, which were lifted promptly after repairs. Currently, normal service has resumed for all customers, with ongoing monitoring of water levels in the tanks.

Starting July 29, a section of Water Tank Road near Canton will close to through traffic until April 18, as crews replace two box culverts. The closure, located between 900 and 960 Water Tank Road, will affect traffic entering and exiting the area. Residents at addresses 900 and lower will use Highway 20, while those at 960 and higher will use East Cherokee Drive. Phase 1 involves addresses 931 and 935, using East Cherokee Drive. A detour via Highway 20 and East Cherokee Drive will be posted, ensuring safety for drivers and construction personnel. STORY 1: City Approves Four Duplexes in Canton’s Riverstone Area

The Canton City Council has approved a request to allow residential development in the Riverstone area, specifically permitting four duplexes, totaling eight homes, on 0.89 acres at the intersection of Cross Street and Center Street. This change was requested by Jesse Gunnin for JRG1, LLC. The site, previously planned for commercial use, is unsuitable due to its size, shape, and proximity to a residential street. The council also approved adjustments to reduce buffer requirements, opting for an eight-foot screening fence instead. The decision follows a public hearing where no residents voiced opposition to the proposal.

C.S. McKinney, Canton author, has recently launched his latest novel titled "Four-Thirty Girl," which combines romance and mystery genres. Released on July 15, this marks McKinney's fourth novel and sixth publication. The story revolves around Joshua Gladstin, who manages Beehives Bookstore while his colleague, Ms. Debbie, falls ill. As Joshua delves into the mysterious "Four-Thirty Girl" and Ms. Debbie's enigmatic life, he confronts unexpected truths. The novel will soon debut as McKinney's first audiobook, narrated by the author himself. Starting July 18, Holly Springs Town Center will host Food Truck Alley Nights at the historic Holly Springs Train Depot on 164 Hickory Road. The debut event will feature Smash Hit Burgers offering burgers, fries, tots, and gourmet milkshakes, Choate BBQ serving barbecue dishes, and Joe’s Lonestar Tacos offering Tex-Mex street tacos and nachos. STORY 4:Red Sox Select Woodstock Alum Blake Aita in MLB Draft

Blake Aita, a former pitcher from Woodstock High School, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round (No. 177 overall) of the MLB draft. Aita, standing at 6-foot-4, played college baseball at Kennesaw State, where he maintained a 3.90 ERA with 84 strikeouts over 85 1/3 innings. His selection continues a streak of at least one Kennesaw State player being drafted in each of the last 16 full drafts. Aita follows fellow Woodstock alum Brennan Milone, drafted in 2022, and joins Caleb Bartolero, a 2023 undrafted free agent. Sports Turf Company has been chosen to construct Cherokee High School’s new athletic complex, set to be completed before the school opens in August 2026. The complex will feature an eight-lane running track, a natural grass practice field, and several artificial turf fields including those for football, softball, and baseball. The artificial turf fields will utilize AstroTurf’s 3D Decade Turf system with Brock Powerbase YSR shock pad and organic BrockFILL infill, designed for athlete safety and performance. Additionally, the natural grass field will incorporate Tifway 419 Bermuda grass. The running track will feature a Rekortan B synthetic surface. The Hickory Flat Public Library is set to reopen after an extensive renovation and expansion project lasting a year and a half. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony are scheduled for July 25, hosted by the Sequoyah Regional Library System. The event begins at 3 p.m. with a ribbon cutting followed by tours, refreshments, and an opportunity to sign up for library cards. The manager will collaborate with Croft and Associates, the design firm, on technical reviews, cost evaluations, and scheduling. The new fire station, prompted by increased call volumes due to Woodstock's growth, will be located on city-owned land, likely along Ridgewalk Parkway. Construction is slated for 2025-26. Woodstock currently operates two fire stations: Station 10 and Station 14, serving essential roles in the community's fire protection infrastructure.

According to the Atlanta Regional Commission's 2024 estimates, Cherokee County added 5,400 residents over the past year, bringing its population to 292,360, marking a growth rate of 1.9%. This is a decline from the previous year's 2.5% growth rate. Despite the slowdown, Cherokee County's growth rate remains among the highest in the region, second only to Atlanta. Factors contributing to the overall slowdown in growth across the region include reduced housing permits, moderated job growth, and high housing prices. The ARC underscores the importance of continued infrastructure investment to sustain the area's growth trajectory.
