🎙 Margaret Preston: Painting a Nation

She didn’t just paint flowers. She painted a question.

What does Australian art really look like?

In this Nightline Australian Bedtime Story, Cheralyn Darcey explores the bold and brilliant life of Margaret Preston, the modernist trailblazer who challenged Australia to see itself differently. From her early studies in Europe to her striking native flower prints and powerful engagement with Aboriginal design motifs, Preston was determined to create an art that belonged to this land, not borrowed from elsewhere.

She was outspoken. Sometimes controversial. Always uncompromising.

Through linocuts, woodblocks and vivid still lifes, Margaret Preston helped shape a distinctly Australian visual identity, one that still influences how we see our landscapes and our flora today.

A story of colour, conviction and creative rebellion.
