Charlotte Father Details Stroke That Had Him 'Paralyzed In His Own Body'

View descriptionShare

I recently celebrated my 40th high school reunion and talked with a high school friend. He told me he'd suffered a stroke a couple of years ago. I was stunned because he was the star athlete and he still kept himself healthy -- I thought. He continued to be a gym rat but said it was his stress level that was out of control. One day while at home, a family member noticed the side of his face started to droop. The beginning of a stroke. Once he got to the hospital, doctors said he'd had multiple strokes. Today, he's recovered and living with less stress.

This is not an uncommon experience. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Stroke is the #2 cause of death worldwide, according to the American Stroke Association. Stroke is a leading cause of death for men & women and 4 out of 5 strokes are preventable. But what is it and why is it?
