Chargers perfectly almost by Tony Jefferson as place alment companion. Tony, thank you so much for being with us in put chargers in the in the verge of Christmas. Christmas Eve. You know day of work for you guys is uh, it's a second day. You came back to practice after the win against the Broncos. Yeah, yeah, Monday was yester, there was first was the first? What's the first?
Ay?
So you were telling me much needed rest you you got to go home, which is for.
You San Diego, San Diego. Yeah, born and raised in San Diego.
Uh.
Absolutely, high school. Yes, shout out any teacher in particular that you want to a shut out our coach.
Coach McFadden. That was my high school coach. We still talk to my two favorite teachers. Miss Hughes, she was my English teacher, okay, helped me with my S A T. S. And then Miss Barunda, who's my avage. Thank you guys always they know they know they have a.
Special excellent shout out to all of them, then then from Tony so so Tony now getting into into the week after after that probably as signature of a win as you can get in the NFL, that game against against the Broncos, and how you guys responded and made the adjustment, whatever adjustment you made in the second half obviously worked. How do you process the game itself from first to second half and what happened if you can share with us a little bit in halftime, that that may be possible.
Yeah. So, I mean when you get to this time of the year in December, when it's it's playoff football, you gotta be on your p's and q's at all times. And I think coming out, you know, we we just weren't on the details, and guys were just kind of, you know, we just weren't really to be to be blunt about it, we just weren't doing our jobs in certain areas. So we never lost faith really within the game. We knew that like once we started doing our job and doing our assignments correctly, like we'd be right back in the ball game. So at halftime, it wasn't really no big raw rah or anything, because it was really it was really simple for us, and we just knew that once we went back out there. You know, let's just flip the switch. Let's get back to who we are as a defense and really just try and focusing on doing our.
Job every time we have we have a play. You're here with us, Tony. You know, I love to ask this question, especially to the rookies, you know, because of the change the transition between the college game to the professional you know, in the NFL. And but I think that in a certain way, it's always the same answer in terms of what's the difference in the NFL margin of error, It's just so small. And that's why I guess that it's about details. It's nothing that you have to change completely.
Yeah, exactly, that's spot on. It's it's the margin of errors is so small, and like it's it's about the people. Hear it all the time, and sometimes it goes through one air and out the other, just because it's like so cliche. But it's really just about honing in on the details and just one player at the time mentality, not trying to you know, look past you know, what are we going to do on the next series. It's one player at a time and just focusing on that.
So Tony where you know, as a team, you guys are one win away to secure you know, the the ticket to the to the party. And on paper, the game this Saturday in New England is against a team that doesn't have a good record stats wise, you know, you see they're at the bottom of in defense, offense. Then they go to Buffalo and give the Bills by who by all accounts of measurements, it's one of the best teams in the AFC. They give them. Hell, how dangers are the New England Patriots.
This is National Football League. I've been in the league for a very long time, and anybody can get beat any week. If you're not on the details. It doesn't matter what the record is. Everybody is capable of losing and winning the ball game. So going into this week, we view it as really just a good NFL football team. There's some things they do well and some things statistically that may not look at the well that they do well. But we're going to go in and focus on us, like, let's be us, let's not get caught up in anything else. That's when the ball game, you know, like once you get once you get into this opportunity where you can get into the dance. You have to be on the details. You have to be on the details, and you gotta be ready to roll.
We'll go back to the dance because there is a question I want to ask you about that how difficult Tony is for the athlete himself to get ready for a game like this in terms of change, you know, the changing time early game for you guys, you gotta wake up like a four or five in the morning in your internal clock, you know, and start get going for the game. Cold weather, it appears it's not going to be as cold as we thought, you know what's going to be. But how difficult it is for you?
Uh, not difficult at all. I'll be up, ready to roll. This is this is a game to get into the to the dance. Like if you're not, if you're not up for this and ready to roll, you're in the wrong sport. So difficulty none, get ready, mentally difficulty negative like I'm ready, Like this is all positivity, like ready to roll, ready to go, ready to go.
Why is it that once the playoffs start, this is inevitable every single year a team that no one saw, you know, coming but they got to the playoffs, they have the opposite and the team that on paper was clearly the superior team, you know, just can't get it done. What is it about the playoffs?
Yeah, it's always I believe they call it the dark horse of the playoffs. There's always a team really that you know, Like I said, once you get into the playoffs, when you get into the dance, like it's a whole new season, everything starts over. It's a whole different ball game. Everybody is. You're playing for your football lives every week, every down, every everything is so important because that one play could be difference in the game. So everybody's like I said, the details are really are at a premium at that point, and anything can go A turnover can change the whole ball game, you know, a miss field goal, a black field goal like those everything so detrimental bro to winning uh in in those moments. So and that's why I always say, once you get into the dance, it's it's just a whole new season.
Bro.
This is a This is a question that I was sharing with my you know, my friend here who's helping us record this, because I want to know your opinion about we are not as a team in this situation because we're actually fighting for the spot on the playoffs. But at this time of the year, you always have teams that are to the fans mostly they are fighting for the best possibility to pick high in the draft, and they want the team to lose. As an athlete, what do you feel about.
That, I don't. I mean, I personally have never been on a team my whole career, thank god, or I've been in that position, but I don't. I don't find that to be true because I think it would be hard to tell players or have players go out there and try to purposely lose. These guys grind all week, they put their bodies on the line, So I don't I don't necessarily believe that's the true thing. I think that's kind of like a outside thing because it's I think it'd be kind of impossible to go out there and purposely.
Lose how much you put in the game, That would.
Be disrespecting the game, in my opinion, disrespecting them and.
Then just let the football gods decide, I mean, whatever it is. But you go out there to try and win every single every single game.
Yeah, that's that's my true belief. I don't. I don't think people would or any organization would actually try to disrespect it the game like that.
Now, this is going to sound like a fumboy question, Believe me, it is not. But you've been in the league since twenty thirteen. You played for pretty good teams in Arizona, San Francisco, Baltimore obviously you know Giants. Now you are with the Chargers, so you've seen a lot of football and a lot of good teams. Does this team have what it takes to maybe shock the war and once you get first, you need to get in the dance once you're there. What's your opinion about it?
Yeah, I think I think this team is built that way. We have someone's depth on both sides of the ball, and I think, like I was, I was scouting last year with the Ravens, and I always heard that, like having depth is so important. And I think we've done a good job of just having guys to death, just including myself, just a guy who's been on practice squad for most of the year, and then just being able to want my numbers called to be ready to go. That's a testament to coaching, testament to the front offices, having guys ready to roll, and uh, you know, I think once you get into this part of the year, there's going to be injuries. It's going to be guys who are going to go down, and you got to be ready and have guys that are ready to step up and go and that that matters the most, like in the playoffs and going forward, like in December and January football. And I think I think we're built for that. We got the tough guys, got star players really every at every level, and uh, you know, guys who want to compete and win.
I assume to ask about that thing as a as a scout in the scouting department for the Ravens because even if it was a little bit, you get to see, you know, the other side operations, which I assume it's very It was very interesting, uh to you. It's been an interesting journey, you know, for you in the in the NFL. What made you like, you know what, I kind of still play this sport.
I promise I have to write a book. Just yep, I'm done. My careers has been so so crazy and like unusual, but uh, you know, I was scouting last year. I was doing pro scouting. It was my first year and I just just got out of a season with the Giants who went to the divisional playoffs. But I injured my foot or whatever, so I was like, I'm not gonna I'm just gonna try this scouting thing, something I always wanted to do, and you know, just being around the facility every day, being around the players every day, and then it was just like, man, I miss it. It's never really that, It's never really went away. It was always there. And then I would mention it, like to like friends or like some some guys like in the scouting department over there, like man, I think I want to come back and play, and like their responsible be like, bro, no, you can't do it. You're a wash stop, you're old stop. And like when I would hear those, it's so hard.
I mean, you play at the highest level, you know, the probably the hardest sport they used to play, and then you don't play anymore, and then like how does the engine you know, gets going?
But when I would hear that, it would just fuel me more. It would just make me like I want to, like Brian could do this, Like I know you may not think if you were in my position, you couldn't do it. But I know me, and like I know me more than anybody else knows me. So I felt confident in doing it, and I did it, and uh, you know, I just feel like I can do it. So well you did it.
But as a matter of fact, you did it. You're here now in this journey, Tony, What's not the most because it's that's hard always, but one of the most important things that you've learned about the game of football and the NFL itself in this journey.
Uh, there's so many different things that I've learned. I just felt like, Uh, one thing that I've really that's really stuck with me, honestly, it's just like believing and have a good work ethic. I felt like early on in my career my work ethic wasn't that strong. I felt like I was playing just off pure ability and instincts. And then I got to Baltimore, I got teamed up with Eric Weddle, and he really kind of like showed me the way to be to be a pro and like from there on, like I had a different view of like being a professional athlete, and like that's really carried on with my mindset on like how to be like a pro.
So, yeah, we're born in San Diego obviously. So were you a Chargers fan growing up?
Yeah? I mean so my dad was a big Chargers fan. Like I was the type of kid who, like I like to go against the grain, so like I like the Raiders for a little bit, but then I couldn't. I couldn't help it, like I love the Chargers, Like I remember getting my first Junior Sailitary for Christmas and when I signed it was funny. My sister texted me, She's like when I signed his Chargers. She's like, do you remember when dad got you that Junior sal jerseys and you ran around that. I literally ran around the house for like thirty minutes, like screaming Junior say, I'm coming to get you. Like like watching those guys like growing up bro, like the younger guys, the rookies and stuff they don't understand, like the old Charger team with like the Goats, like the Gats, like those guys, Yeah, yeah, those those.
How crazy that you're playing for the franchise?
You know, these bottle I don't take it for granted at all. Like every time I practice, I look at the helmet, like, man, I really got I got a boat on my helmet right now. It's like insane, you know. So I'm loving every moment.
I understand. Your mother is from the Mexican Harry touch mom your mom?
