Vic Food Guys - The Whole Beast

BC Hydro spokesperson Karla Louwers joins the program to explain why ongoing work at the Sidney substation has temporarily left the Saanich Peninsula more susceptible to widespread outages. Crews have temporarily tied five circuits together while replacing aging equipment, meaning a fault that would normally affect a smaller area can knock out power to more than 8,200 customers. Recent outages were caused by branches contacting power lines, while an outage last week was apparently triggered when birds dropped a rabbit onto the wires. BC Hydro expects the substation work to be completed by July 9.

Branches, birds blamed for recent peninsula outages

BC Nurses' Union president Adriane Gear joins the program after the union issued a 72-hour strike notice Monday. She explains why members rejected the tentative agreement, discusses staffing shortages, retention challenges and workplace pressures facing front-line nurses, and responds to the Health Employers Association of BC's call to return to the bargaining table. Gear says the union is prepared to resume talks but argues government must do more to address nurses' concerns and reduce reliance on costly private agency staffing.
