In this episode of Ceasefire, hosts Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros tackle the fundamental definitions of capitalism and socialism. They explore what each system actually means — private/individual ownership vs. collective ownership of the means of production — and unpack common misconceptions that blur the two. Along the way they discuss public roads, free markets, monopolies, crony capitalism, Sweden's economic model, Social Security, Medicaid, state vs. federal accountability, and the historical rise in global life expectancy under capitalism. They close with two book recommendations and a reflection on the nature of power in any political system.

00     Intro — Dale and Ron introduce the show's goal: defining capitalism and socialism, and why people often misunderstand both terms.

39     Defining Capitalism — Private/individual ownership of property, businesses, and possessions vs. collective ownership. Free markets as a related but distinct concept. The U.S. as "somewhat" capitalist.

15     Public Roads vs. Socialism — Are public roads socialist? The hosts debate whether infrastructure equals socialism or is better understood as promoting common welfare and commerce.

30     Defining Socialism — Collective ownership of the means of production. The hosts distinguish socialism from welfare states and safety nets.

20     Historical Context: Charters & Corporations — Early America's government-chartered private companies for roads and canals, and how those charters evolved into modern corporations.

47     TxDOT vs. County Road Maintenance — A local example: TxDOT hires contractors while Kendall County uses its own crews. Who owns the "means of production" for road work?

55     Free Markets ≠ Capitalism — You can have free markets under socialism. Many complaints about "capitalism" (monopolies, cronyism) are actually caused by government intervention.

03     "Adjective Capitalism" — War capitalism, crony capitalism — the hosts argue that tacking negative concepts onto "capitalism" misattributes problems that predate and exist independently of it.

40     Industrialization & Child Labor — Capitalism gets blamed for pre-existing ills like child labor, even though rising living standards under capitalism eventually helped end those practices.

30     Break

44     Socialist Countries List — Who's actually socialist? Sweden is frequently cited but is capitalist with a strong safety net. Many formerly socialist countries (Hungary, Albania, Bulgaria, Somalia, Congo, Angola) are no longer.

03  Sweden Deep Dive — Sweden's free markets fund its social services. They've had to pull back some services due to cost. Smaller countries have more accountability.

00  Social Security: Investment or Insurance? — Republicans view it as an earned right, like an IRA, but it's actually a social insurance program paying out far more than most people put in.

37  Accountability & Scale — In a large country like the U.S., accountability for social programs is dispersed across 50 states and a vast geography, unlike smaller nations.

48  Medicaid: State vs. Federal — California's Medicaid differs from Texas's. The hosts argue for devolving social services to the state level for better accountability.

20  Devolution Dream — Ron's soapbox: all social services should be state-run and state-funded. Let states compete.

18  State Competition & Migration — States with high benefits and high taxes (California) drive people and corporations to states like Texas. Fear of competition fuels the federal-vs-state debate.

39  Jefferson's Evolution — Jefferson envisioned an agrarian economy but changed his mind near death as industrialization clearly benefited people.

51  Life Expectancy Under Capitalism — Global life expectancy rose from ~31 years (1900) to 72.6 years (2020) — a direct benefit of capitalist systems.

29  Third World Exploitation — Mining of lithium and cobalt for iPhones and EVs. The hosts note these countries are largely socialist, and exploitation predates industrialization.

26  "Are you going to turn in your iPhone?" — The hosts challenge critics to consider what they'd give up to avoid the systems they criticize.

08  Book Recommendations — The Triumph of Economic Freedom by Phil Gramm (myths of capitalism) and The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek (the path to oppression).

14  Hayek on Power — People drawn to power will always seek leadership positions, regardless of the political system. Socialism amplifies this danger; a federalist republic has built-in limits.

27  Closing Thoughts — Private power (Bill Gates, Musk) can't force you to do anything; government power can. The hosts sign off and direct
