The Burning Truth with Casey Hendrickson tackles the nicotine-policy contradiction: regulations meant to curb vaping may be pushing some users back toward combustible cigarettes — the product everyone agrees is far more dangerous.

The policy backfire: Casey revisits the warning that limiting flavored vaping products could drive people back to smoking. Research examining flavor restrictions found associations with higher cigarette use, including estimated increases in prior-month smoking among young adults and adolescents after restrictions took effect. The study identifies substitution toward cigarettes as a potential unintended consequence — though it does not prove every smoker’s individual behavior was caused by a flavor ban.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih

Flavors and smoking reduction: A study discussed in Addictive Behaviors found adult smokers offered non-tobacco vaping flavors had higher e-cigarette uptake than those offered tobacco flavor only, and were more likely to report cutting cigarette consumption by at least half. At the six-month follow-up, the reported reduction figures remained higher for those with non-tobacco flavor options.reason

The FDA’s balancing act: The FDA says flavored e-cigarette applications must demonstrate that potential benefits for adults who smoke — such as switching away from combustible cigarettes — outweigh risks to youth. Its 2026 draft guidance acknowledges the adult-switching question while emphasizing that fruit and candy-style flavors can pose a greater youth-use risk; the agency also notes that evidence about flavors and cessation remains mixed.fda+1

Zyn and harm reduction: Casey also discusses nicotine pouches and the political push to regulate or tax them like cigarettes. The FDA authorized Zyn products for marketing after concluding that, for adults who smoke or use smokeless tobacco and completely switch, the products may offer a lower-risk alternative — but nicotine remains addictive, and pouches are not federally approved as cessation medications.wjla+1
