Topic: Her Story- Daughters of Modjaji

The stories we hear as children shape so much of how we act and think. It is why so many children stories have lessons and morals, so that we can learn right from wrong. On another level it shapes the way we see people, and since many popular stories are Westernised, we might feel excluded from the narrative. However, this is changing. More and more African stories are being told and written. One of them is Her Story: Daughters of Modjadji. It is the first in a planned children’s book series for 7-12 year old girls that features African women whose lives inspire. The women in the book are from diverse settings, and their stories reflect not only the multiple roles that women play in society, but also the obstacles they face as a result of race, class and most importantly; their gender.
