As of September 2024, South Africa had 57,970 remand detainees awaiting trial, with 3,167 granted bail but still in custody—many simply unable to afford the amounts. Shockingly, 2,183 of these individuals owe less than R1,000, sparking calls for solutions like a public Bail Fund to ensure that the principle of "innocent until proven guilty" is upheld for all.
