John Maytham speaks to journalist and author Nick Dall about the forgotten World War II fighter pilot known as “Sailor” Malan, who played an important role during the famous Battle of Britain. Malan died exactly sixty years ago in 1963 but his legacy was erased by the South African government due to his role as the leader of the Torch Commando, a liberal anti-authoritarian organisation that opposed the introduction of the apartheid system. His story is featured in a new book by Nick Dall and Matthew Blackman, titled: Legends: People Who Changed SA for the Better.
