The short-term rental platform Airbnb has played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s short-term rental market with Airbnbs in Cape Town welcoming 700,000 guests in 2023 alone but, like in many other countries, locals have been calling for restrictions to be put in place to avoid making the housing crisis worse. The South African government has announced plans to regulate Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms with the aim of balancing the needs of tourism, housing and the local communities.
