Following the Netflix documentary Inside the Manosphere and the listener conversations it sparked, Lester Kiewit speaks to Kyle Janse, researcher at the Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change, about how the internet is shaping ideas of masculinity. Drawing on a year-long analysis of over two million South African social media posts, Janse explores the pressures men face around financial provision, absentee fatherhood, and emotional socialisation, as well as the ridicule and backlash men encounter when challenging harmful norms. The discussion also highlights emerging ideas of positive masculinity and the role online spaces play in reinforcing, contesting, and reshaping traditional gender expectations.
